Ideas on Overlord Aggression
« on: June 21, 2012, 11:51:10 pm »
Hello, I'm new to the game, and I was wondering at what point does the Overlord decide to pull a mission on the player? Sure he's got goons and critters scattered all over the continent, but as lieutenants start falling, when does the decision to get more active comes in?

I figure he got a bunch of overlord tier monsters guarding his place, so why not send a few out to stalk the player every now and again. He could send a small hit squad to or near areas that players have completed several missions, or have them barge in if the player causes too much trouble. I also figure it would be a higher difficulty thing, as players getting forced out of an area by overleveled monster might be a issue with some people.

Maybe have them use a vehicle to get around that can be seen from the world map as a gauge of whether the player would want to risk going into an area near them. I figure an airship, or land mobile base, or even a submarine for the ocean areas could mark them as they go about on the map.

And if the player is feeling daring enough, or has knocked off a few lieutenants, the player can enter these vehicles and do a mission against the crew. Of course they would have to soften up the vehicle first.

Okay, now I've got visions of the ice pirate ships shooting skelebots at you instead of just ice blocks.

Aye, this is something I'm really hoping to see in the game at some point as well.

I think, the number one type of thing I want to see more of right now is world-map stuff.  The world-map represents the "strategic" side of the game, but there's only so much you can DO there.   Granted, what IS there is pretty good;  the continent layouts are way better than they were originally, and these layouts actually MATTER, particularly once you hit tier 3.  There's some good decision making in terms of where/when to place shelters/buoys, and where to use the seek resources/survivors scrolls, but I feel that quite alot more could be done here to make it that much more interesting.

Back in the beta there were things like wandering monster hordes that could come and attack the settlements (or just wander around), which made things interesting, and made it feel like the bad guys really had a PRESENCE.   Right now, the Overlord is THERE, but..... he doesnt really DO anything.  The main "presence" is that of the evil wind;  everything else is just randomized monsters.

There are the ice pirates of course, but they're REALLY ineffective right now; definitely want to see some more stuff with these guys, make them into a real threat, maybe give them the ability to actually move around the continent (they could have a timer similar to missions, for WHEN exactly they move).   Some way to board the ship and take it out (perhaps with a special scroll you have to craft) by defeating the pilot (who of course would often be something like a giant wasp or pile of fairies, because, you know, that makes total sense), complete with Metroid-ish "get out" sequence..... that'd be cool.    Right now the pirates are only a threat in surface JtE missions, and even then they're not THAT bad.

So yeah, would like to see more STUFF happening on the continent representing the Overlord's schemes, and more things that the player has the ability to do on the worldmap as well, whatever that turns out to be.

Hi, and welcome to the forums!

Right now, the Overlord doesn't get more active, but, this type of thing is definitely something we plan to include in the game. When? I'm not sure yet, we are on a bit of a tight schedule for our next official release, and I'm not sure we have time for this in there, but, we do want to add this at some point.

Thanks for the feedback!

That's ok, it sounds like you guys already have a nice long laundry list of things to add. It's also cool that you guys check the forums often too.

I guess to start small, the overlord could send a lone floating assassin probe armed with miasma whip and teleport, a combo that should get a player's attention to the fact that the overlord wants them dead.
