So I just downloaded the demo on Steam and it took my key. Steam won't take my key directly but the demo will?

Yea, the demo has always taken all valid keys from the beginning; steam doesn't get involved in that step.

That's how I play Tidalis. I had the demo and registered my key through that and it works. Will achievements sync if this happens though?

I don't know, but if steam doesn't try to do anything different with the "demo" appid than the "normal" appid it may well work.

Just tested, achievements do not sync. I have a ton of achievements on my non-steam copy but the Steam copy I just registered does not have any.
