Forgive me if this is obviously posted somewhere else, for as of yet I've only posted on the AVWW mantis (I love databases!) but could some kind soul list to me the process one would go about for converting a directly-purchased AVWW to a steam copy of the game?

I understand that it may not yet be able to do, but for the future, what steps would I undertake? I have never done this before. Is it the Activate A Product On Steam option from the Games Menu?

It's actually stupidly easy. You use that menu option and then enter your AVWW key into there. Once Valve gets off their arses and redeem the keys in the system, your game will validate. Until then though, we have to wait :/

Do I have to request for a steam key if I purchase from gamersgate? The key doesn't look like typical steam key.
Also the will I be able to preserve the save game/world from my current copy?

The keys are set by the developer, not steam. The keys for AVWW all look about the same, so there isn't really a "typical steam key".

As for the second question, when you activate the game with Steam, I'm not sure if it moves your files over or not, I don't think so, but backing the world up every once in a while is a smart idea whether you are moving the game or not. If you back it up and Steam does move it, it's easy to put back.

So, wait - are you saying we'll be able to register our existing keys with Steam at some point?

well I found the information here
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

looks like typical valid key is
Valve CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
Valve CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7
...
I have activated many product keys.. typically looks like above format

and it also says there
AI War CD Keys in various formats
I guess this will be the same for AVWW will be using custom developer set keys.

Where is this character/world backup folder located if I want to manually move the save game over to steam version?

From your game directory, it's in \Runtimedata\Worlds\[name of world]

Grab the entire directory.

Thanks..

My experience from grabbing save game and putting into steam version for other games.. usually the steam achievement won't unlock.. unless u re-achieve it again.

With AI:War, all in game achivements would sync with Steam if you achieved another one. So say you had 40 unlocked and then unlocked another, all 41 would sync to Steam.

Is Steam cloud support a possibility for this title, down the road?  I'm not sure what the file size limit is, but my instincts tell me it's too small to accommodate a very aged world.

Is there any way to know when my key will be Steam-valid? How it was last time - Steam said it to you, or it was global news, or what?

I don't believe that Steam Cloud will work for this title for the simple fact that the game is constantly using the files as it runs. The Steam Cloud would get in the way of that and cause quite a few problems.

Steam Cloud only Syncs when you are not playing the game.

Hmm, that is not why we don't have Steam Cloud, but I can't recall what Chris said about it that he didn't want to do.  You can use clouds like Dropbox though to keep games like this "in the cloud".
