Puzzle rooms, pyramids, and pacing
« on: April 06, 2012, 02:27:35 pm »
It seems like puzzle rooms are only in pyramids... if this is truly the case, I would suggest adding the chance to all buildings to add variety.  Also, can we have some more variety in terms of the puzzles?  The idea is great, but it just needs to be fleshed out a bit imo.

As for pyramids, I feel that the maze rooms should only be in stash rooms.  Too many of the rooms are huge mazes.. it just feels monotonous.  I would also love if doorways were a different color.. with the gravestones being green, it is very hard for me to find the doors after exploring.

On a separate note, I'd love if there was more of a push/motivation to move between tiers.  It is so easy to grind at tier 1, it makes me stubborn to move to tier 2.. and then it gets monotonous.. sure, I am doing it to myself, but there should also be a bit of a game push to not hang around indefinitely imo.

Puzzle rooms are only in large buildings. Pyramids are probably the only desert buildings that have them, but other buildings in other region types have them. I'm not sure if Chris is planning to add more puzzle types, but, my guess is that he is, but probably after 1.0.

I know they can also spawn in lava towers. In fact that's the only place I've ever found them, but I hadn't checked around a desert region recently. I assume maybe also some of the larger office tower style things in ice ages might have them? But I don't know that for sure.

From the changelog for 0.913:

Mystery puzzle rooms are now seeded into the game. They can be found in certain large buildings:

80% chance in pyramids in the desert (pretty common building)
100% chance in those giant military industrial complex buildings in the thawing ice age (pretty rare building).
10%, 20%, and 40% chance in the lava flats towers (in respective order of tower size).
10% chance in the windmills in the grasslands (come on, it's the iconic windmill -- there had to be a little bit of something there that was unusual).
10% chance in the "dark gatehouse" which you can see sometimes underground and sometimes in The Deep.
This thus gives some special incentive for exploring certain large buildings, though as more buildings are added we don't plan on making an exhaustive public list of where you can find these and in what percentages. The above is mostly just for illustrative purposes, and you find clues when you find them; but any sufficiently large and impressive building will have some chance of having a mystery puzzle room.

Oh, and regarding maze rooms in pyramids: They're awesome when it comes to enchantments. It seems each room has enough containers to give you a single enchantment, and then some.

Try and get Greater Teleport (or is it Improved?). Maze rooms are totally different, and really fun  ;)

Is this an unlock limited to reaching a certain continent or something? I don't think I've ever seen anything but lesser teleport.

I think there are way too many maze rooms in general.  Maybe Greater Telep helps with that, but I've yet to see it after probably 25+ hours of play.  The high number of enchants in the maze help, but that also makes me feel obligated to clear out the maze to get every single one, and then clear out the next maze and the next...

Personally, I'd love if there was less need to grind in the first place.

I think you have to unlock ember vorticies (?) by going to a stash room in a Deep Wood House in The Deeps at CP level 5. Then, you can create it after you make lesser.
