Overlords...... HOW?!?
« on: May 04, 2012, 07:37:18 am »
Ok, yeah.   I honestly have NO idea how to kill this thing.

Maybe it's the RNG being a flaming turd though, because the room to fight this huge thing is DINKY with these irritating wall things.....

But basically, no matter what I do, the ENTIRE FIGHT is this:

The boss fires that attack EVEN ONCE, and I may as well restart, because it is over.   There's NO ROOM to dodge that, and there's no spell to remove them (since each one takes like 6 hits with even my strongest attack).

This is going to be compounded by the problem of "dying = ghosts".   Eventually, this WILL be an impossible situation.

Worse yet, the spawners keep crapping out stupid robots and espers, and there's nothing I can do about THOSE either, because the boss proceeds to stand on top of them if I try to remove them.   I cant take out the robots, because most of the time, THEYRE STANDING IN THE BOSS.

Also, if there's some sort of weak spot to this thing (as with the giant robots) I actually cant use it;  I have to use a controller to play this, which means using the targeting (the stick-aim seems completely useless).   As best I can tell though, the thing doesnt have a weak point.

Obviously the boss has all sorts of crazy attacks, but it's mostly those fireballs + room the size of a small frog that pushes this fight into "fake difficulty" territory.    The ghosts (they SERIOUSLY shouldnt be allowed to spawn in boss rooms, or at least not in leiutenant/overlord rooms) are just gonna make that worse.

For the time being, it seems I'm stuck, and cant go any further.

I assume your ranged spells are Tier 5? Also, for the spawners, try "Douse Monster Nest". It won't take them out, but it makes them stop spawning.

Yeah, tier 5, mostly using light spells (plasma bolt mainly) for damage (and the Leafy Whip), plus a 40% boost enchant for light element, and of course some other stuff like double jump and defense increase.   I think the Plasma Bolt's DPS is about 1700.  The particular character was set up as a high-damage one, with semi-decent health.   Couldnt really use the Douse spell with this character (it costs too much), or I'd indeed have done that.   I have a seperate high-mana guy for doing stuff like that or the time changers or shields or other "big" spells, but of course as a side effect he doesnt do very much damage compared to this guy.

My central problem really is the fireballs.   Oh sure, the other attacks are pretty darned devious (omigod METEORS), as is the presence of other enemies, but those honestly never feel "cheap" or something;  difficult as all hell, but not cheap.   Dodging all the crazy crap from this is very hard, but still possible.  Dodging those fireballs though..... there's just no room to get around the monstrous cloud of the things that the boss fires (and he really seems to love firing those, lol.   Does it often.).

So I keep wondering if there's something I'm missing here.

Myself and Wanderer dealt with a very similair situation and managed to complete it using a tier 5 fire shield.

I've had that thought;  the problem is that I'd *have* to use the big-mana-little-damage guy for that, since those shields are so draining.   Even then that means pretty much only being able to actually attack the boss (or anything else) when he's not launching fireballs.   Using the shields with the damage guy, they last all of 2 or 3 seconds.

I havent tried taking the mana guy in there with his shields and stuff to see how he'd do, specifically because I kinda ran outta time tonight, haha.   I'll have to give that a shot.   I hadnt really levelled up the shields much at all;  the game doesnt make it clear as to just WHAT changes with them when levelled.    So only got a level 2 fire shield (used it to clear a JtP mission though finally, yay!).

This is one of those game elements where I REALLY dont think it needs any big changes;  I'd gone into the room the first time thinking "bah, the leiutenants kept turning out to be giant robots and a big green blob, so the overlord is probably another robot", and then instead "HOLY CRAP GIANT MAGIC DINOSAUR".   The crazy barrage of crap everywhere and overall difficulty is what it should be.   Just the darn "massive cloud of homing fireballs in tiny room" bit......

It changes the amount of damage they can absorb before failing.

The last 8 overlord rooms I have visited have been [pretty much that exact same] tiny room. :/

I mean, the overlords are gigantic, and those rooms are small. Why are they in those rooms? It's like hiding in a cardboard box or a.... oh gosh, are we, the valiant glyphbearers, attacking the overlord while he's in the bathroom??

I just fought that thing in that type of room.

First take care of monster nests then shoot him from where you are.

If he casts flares slowly kite them up and to the other side of the room and down the left shaft. They only last 20 seconds. That's pretty much it.

The enemies-that-act-as-shots are generally my least favorite part of AVWW since they are too tough to kill and just dodging until they time out feels lame too.

I've found that shields are one of the best things ever to get rid of enemies that act as shots. I used to find fairies incredibly difficult. Now I just activate a shield and run through the little fairies then go back to killing the big fairies. I don't know if the fires die when they hit or not though. If they do then shields would be best. If not, then making sure you have lots of platforms scattered around the room would be best so you can dodge easily.

To me, these are fine, as long as you actually have room to dodge or some way of dealing with them that isnt "shoot them a whole bunch", which never seems to work.

The advice about the shields was totally spot-on for this one.  That + lotsa mana was what made this fight doable.  I'll be experimenting with those alot more now;  they'd originally seemed pretty useless, but turns out they arent.   Only needed level 3 fire for this one.  And the Douse spell seems very, very essential for beating this.

As it is, pretty epic battle, aside from the first 5 minutes which were "wait for ghost to come to where I can shoot him before I move".   THAT part was boring.  Everything AFTER that was pretty awesome.  The only problem was that every now and then the overlord would sorta get stuck just running at me, or trying to, with one of those walls in the way, and would entirely stop attacking while this was going on.   AI glitch?   That didn't happen all that often though, most of the time he ran around shooting crazy crap everywhere.   And I managed to die once by falling on the boss and getting hit by the entire meteor attack all at once.  Ouch.

Gotta say, I like all of the boss fights that are in the game so far.    Definitely one of my favorite aspects of it.   I *think* I've seen all of them now, though I've only seen the..... mechanical whatsit with the missiles exactly once.   Unless there's more that unlock on continent 2 here.

The fairies are still pretty annoying though.

Well, if that was your first overlord fight, you haven't seen them all, as there are two different overlords currently.

That's because Boss rooms actually use templates. It's not randomly generated like other parts are. In the files, there are 4 rooms that are the same small square shape with slightly different interiors and mine, which is a large open outdoor arena. There are two more that I have never played on, but they certainly look different from the room you're on. In my opinion, we need more Overlord room variety because the current selection is slim and the tight formation of most of the rooms makes the Overlord fights a little boring and/or overly difficult.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Aha, so Magic Godzilla isnt the only overlord type;  good to know.

Do you guys plan on adding more bosses at some point?   Hoping so, particularly considering how often players are going to be running into them.

Also those boss gang missions are excellent.

I agree.

This fight was still pretty darn hard, but some attacks (like the sine waves, or attacks by other enemies in the room) were entirely avoidable merely by standing in the wall things and waiting.

A big, open room, where you cant hide behind walls completely, would make this even more exciting.

We'll get to more overlord room variety at some point if it stays as-is, but just so you know, you can make a new overlord room template room yourself if you want to :)

The existing templates are, from your AVWW directory:

\RuntimeData\Logic\RoomMaps\OverlordBossRoom\

Glad the overlord fight worked out :)  Yea, those big swarms of fire... ow.
