It's not enormous, but it is there.  We could probably move down to the low four digits, but don't see an enormously compelling reason to do so for all the reasons I outlined above.  We don't even show that number most of the time.

At any rate, I'm just going to stop responding in this thread for a while -- it is important stuff, but it's not important at the level it's being discussed right now.  We really need to finish... more things than we can finish, in the next week so that we can hit beta phase 3.  This particular thread is important to revisit prior to 1.0, but not prior to beta phase 3.

Thanks for understanding, folks!

The base health seems to be around 30000 now, lop off two digits and you only lose a negligible amount of precision.

I went a different way in the new version -- check it out.  No changes in the underlying numbers, but the visual display for health and mana for characters is drastically simpler-looking.

Well i guess for now i'll hold back my battle hounds ;P They were very cold standing outside anyway, curses on -21°C .. i hate harsh winters with barely any snow.

Gosh, where is it -21 C? I've been thinking this has been a very mild winter.

Actually make that -23°C ... Germany and thats not the coldest measured the past week (by far) ;) Bit south of Berlin in the "tundra" as I like to call it... its really rare we have such seriously cold winters here... last winter had lots of snow but was extremely pleasant not to mention the summer had more rain than all summers measured before and was still one of the hottest in-between (rain + heat do some very nasty storms and terrible unhealthy climate). But this winter for the first time as far as i can think back I have actual ice flowers INSIDE the house windows of the sleeping rooms (old but still double isolation glass and all)

From what i read lowest temps were around -27°C and in non-populated areas around -30°C.. makes me appreciate what the Siberian Russians go through EACH winter... brrrr

Good thing my heating works this time ;) Last winter i was without (save some electronic heaters). So that was fun.....

Is that a normal winter for Germany? I'm in Beijing and it was like that the year before last (fortunately China is quite good at heating; less so at cooling --- that summer had a month over 40 every day and it turns out the power shorts out in residential areas if everyone is using AC, so I had a pretty rough month of working by candlelight with a hand fan), but the last two years have been much more mild and I think that's more typical. My family in New York tell me there have only been a few days below zero this year, which is practically unheard-of.

We're at the same temperature here in Sweden. Also, I'm with Keith. 1000 is a lot more sensible. Though I'd honestly prefer 100, but if that mucks with the game, I' can stomach 1000. 5000+ is starting to get a bit out of hand.

eRe4s3r -- Can I use the life bar graphics that you posted?  I'll modify them a bit to get them to fit the painterly style of the game, but the base graphic would be great for most of the bars in the game.  Let me know if those are okay, to use, or if they are from WoW or something. ;)

Actually, nevermind -- I've got my own thing worked out, that I think you'll like anyhow. :)

Hah ;)
I hadn't saved it anyway if its such "can do that within 3 minutes" stuff i usually do not save with layers intact, just adds to the clutter in my project folders (which is immense already).. I should get in the habit of saving but... ah well ;)

But yeah, those bars where hand-crafted.. that is.. 1 block was crafted, then copied (would be hard to make a specific number of them otherwise), merged, and a gradient applied to darken the top and bottom and another gradient on top of that to brighten the left/right ends...

In case someone wants to duplicate it ;) One can make the blocks incredibly detailed and intricate that way and even make interlocking repeating patterns..... but oh well, very few people put any effort into the display bars nowadays.

Thanks for the notes on how to do it!

Attached is the new HUD that I'm working on, if you want to see it early. :)
