I know, I know, we've been saying it was going to be next week.  And we could hit that target, if we wanted to launch just on our own site and not give reviewers any advance time with the very-near-final game before it releases.

But the game is now definitely coming to a large digital distributor that we all know and love (and who carries all of Arcen's other titles), and we have to coordinate our schedules not only with them but also with all the other vendors that already carry A Valley Without Wind.

I don't have a specific release day yet, but I will update you with that as soon as I do.

In the meantime, this gives us more time to pack in the polish, the bugfixes, and even more content prior to 1.0.  We had a list of things that we had planned to do "just after 1.0," but now that list of things is instead going to be a list of things for "just before 1.0" instead.

We still have a huge commitment to getting the game into a final-except-for-content state in the next week or so, by the way, for two reasons: 1) being able to give this to reviewers so they have time to do their thing before the big 1.0 release; and 2) having an ultra-solid build to take with us to PAX East.

I'll share further news on this as I have it, but I literally just got the confirmation on some of this stuff in the last 30 minutes and so you're hearing it almost as soon as I am figuring it out myself.

Cheers!

Oh thank goodness, you gave me a lot of time to write up my review of this game that I figured I wouldn't have.  Phew.  Finals kicked my butt so I've had very little time to work on that post or play the game as much as I'd like.

So for me this is great, but I'll probably be the vocal minority ;)

And it never hurts to get more time to develop it before release.  So I say bring on more time, and I was starting to wonder if you were pushing that date as it was.

I think by definition most people who really want to be playing the game already are :)  But there's probably a fair group who are trying to wait until the "beta" label goes away, for various reasons.  I tend to avoid playing betas myself, as I have so little time to play games that I want a "finished" experience in that time.  If only released games were frequently finished... ;)

Yep, indeed.  Anyone who is a "true fan" would would be disappointed by a delay isn't actually going to find anything delayed.  We're keeping essentially to the same schedule of development we otherwise would have, although some things actually get accelerated with this change (four missions we just today had decided to delay until just after 1.0 will instead be coming in the next week or so).  It's mostly the folks who are waiting for the "beta" tag to go away that this would affect them at all.

Congrats on picking a final final date! I still haven't played more than five minutes of the thing and I have been really looking forward to the 1.0 release.

Wouldn't you make more money by having it only on your site for the first month so no one takes a cut of your sales?

Thanks!

You'd think so, but our data from past games indicates otherwise.  There are a wide variety of things to consider, including:
- Press coverage, and how that coincides with availability on major distributors.
- Players who only buy from X distributor if they can at all help it, and just wait until release on that distributor to buy the game (you'd be surprised how many people match this).
- The fact that a lot of gamers only hear about most indie games through seeing them on sale at certain distributors in the first place (you'd really be surprised how many people match this).

In essence, the only people that we make more money off of by selling direct are the existing core fans, and we're already selling the game direct for them.  And they've already bought it.  Of course, since we're selling it at a big discount during beta, they got a deal out of it anyhow, so we're still not really maximizing revenue if you look at it only that far.  But with all the beta and alpha testing we've gotten out of our fanbase, they've more than collectively "earned" the discount -- they get a better product, and so do we, so hopefully everybody wins that way.

At any rate, if you look at our goals as being to earn the most money that means two prerequisites:
1. Having the best game possible that we can make.
2. Players hearing about it (through press or distributors).

And sitting alone on our own site as the sole place to buy it only works if you've already got a fanbase that is much larger than ours.  A few thousands preorders is great, it's more than a lot of indies get, but it's not a $3m kickstarter campaign or anything. ;)

Yeah, this is what EA thinks about Origin, but I'm curious how many customers they've lost by not being on other platforms such as Steam.  I know I won't touch Origin.

Of course, that's not helped by Origin being pants and invasive either...

Alright!  That's the week of my birthday!  Maybe it'll be out on my "digital distributor of choice" in time for that momentous event, so I can get myself another copy.  Or give a copy to my friends, thus giving myself the gift of coop buddies.
