Not liking vengeful ghosts
« on: September 29, 2011, 03:38:32 pm »
I have now died five times and due to forgetting where I was when I died and no way of finding vengeful ghosts on the strategy map I now have an army of ghosts heading to my settlement. Everytime I try to take this ghost army out I end up dieing as they are far too difficult to kill. This means I then strengthen the army and make the repeat run even harder.

Has anyone got any tips for this?

Try to gain a few levels before advancing the next turn. The ghosts stay at the same level, so, try to overlevel them. Also, keep moving, they are slow, and can only hit you w/ melee, so keep on the move.

Wood platforms -- you want to stay out of their miasma, and kite around them.  If you can kill just one of them, then that's a victory in itself and you can leave and deal with the others later.  If the region they are in is too tough to deal with, too, you can actually advance a macrogame turn so that they get closer and into an easier region.

Another thing: you can of course always just keep going in adventure mode, level up a time or two, and then have an easier time with the ghosts that are now lower-level than you.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the tips guys. Are the ghosts the same level as the character when I died? If so I will need to get to level 10+ as I'm 8 now and just died before I tackle them.

I will post how I go on and hopefully my settlement will survive. If not I have just found a second one so it won't be the end of the world.

Yep, the ghosts are the same level as you were when you died.

In terms of them reaching your settlement, they won't ever get there so long as you don't end strategic turns enough times that they do.  They only move on turn endings.  So you have all the time you want to deal with them, but they impact your ability to continue the strategic side until you deal with them.

Things have now got much worse on finding this new settlement it's in a level 14 area and I'm currently 8 and the ghosts are now headed that way. Does the settlement level of 14 mean thay stand any better chance or do I just need to keep leveling up till I can take them on?

On a side note I've just found my first evil outpost. Wow never a dull moment!!!

The settlement is in a region level of 14, but all the NPCs there will be the same level as you.  The NPCs will engage in the fight with you against the ghosts if the ghosts get to that settlement, but expect to see some casualties there if that happens.  It won't spawn more ghosts, though, thanks to the protection of the illari.

I'm not ending turns anymore just trying to level up and get more npc's into the settlement. Maybe some kind of fortify action would be good so I could reinforce the settlement under attack from other settlements I've found.

I only have 3 npc's in the new settlement.

I actually feel that the miasma last for a too long time.

That's it, it's all I wanted to tell now.

Yeah I think so too, it's annoying that after you defeated a ghost there is a long trail of miasma I have to wait for it to go away to get past it. Perhaps you could make it destructible, like the dragon's fire breath. Perhaps I should put this on mantis.

Increased npc's in my new settlement to 7 and ghosts attack in 2 turns might just see what happens. What do you guys think?

I must say that I am loving the way the Vengeful Ghosts mechanic works.

Death is much more than a corpse run now, in fact, it costs almost no time at all. I can easily teleport right back to where I was and continue. Now, in the case that I died to a boss, that boss effectively becomes harder, which is a fun and interesting mechanic.

I don’t “want to not die” because I’ll have to do something boring, something other than playing the game.  I try to stay alive because dying has true consequences. The first time I died to a boss and went back, and then died again, I found myself unable to conquer that dungeon, it was impossible at my current level. Deciding to move on to other places, not inhabited by my own poor choices, was an interesting game choice I haven’t had the opportunity to make before.

In a normal, linear adventure game, failure is just reloading a save or checkpoint, or maybe missing bonuses. In a persistent game without saves, the penalty is usually just a time sink. A rogue-like game makes you start all over again, no hope of returning.  Here, I can either overcome the obstacle I put in my own way by trying different tactics, or do something else until I am able to return.  I feel like I actually have choices and all the options are right.

I half-like the vengeful ghosts as well.

Only half because firstly there needs to be a way to remove ghosts other than just murdering them, mechanically so that you can re-level the playing field where ever you have died to many times, and thematically because bashing your dead heroes in the face seems somehow disrespectful, in needn't be easy, maybe having to give a specific offering to their grave every so many turns or something of that ilk.

Secondly the miasma trail is unbelievably annoying, in duration more than anything else, I'm fine with damage trails but having to wait whilst the trail of something you have already killed vanishes is just irritating, if the concern is that shortening the duration makes it too easy then just up the damage or size
