No Zombies!?

No Zombies!?

I mean, obviously they have been done a fair number of times before... but that is because they are cripplingly awesome. having watched the latest video in which the character is fleeing through the woods from undead.. I cant help but feel that if you replaced skeletor with decomposing humans, that video would look genuinely terrifiying (although, my preffered vision of zombies is the 28 days/weeks infected- fast, violent & human- over the dawn of the dead style semi-invincible walking corpses).

I literally just watched through all the videos and read a few posts here, and my impressions are mixed and confused... especially the video in which the player is a blue skeleton being chased by white skeletons while diabolo-style magic fx blare all over the screen... i was hoping for somthing scary and gritty combining The Road, Stalker, Macgyver & 28 days/weeks  ;D

is this going to be based around items still, like alden ridge was planned to be? all the stuff in there about choosing between loads of utility items with a strictly limited inventory and primarily fleeing over fighting sounded incredible and unique, probably the most excited I had been about a game world since Stalker (which dissapointed by being a fairly normal shooter in practice, although bricks were shat).
things I love in games;

  • starting at the bottom in a huge open ended world (morrowind)
  • being afraid (stalker)
  • hunting bling/gear/items (morrowind)
  • problems with multiple solutions (deus ex)
  • room for player to adopt his own unique playstyle/faction/character (deus ex/star ruler/morrowind)
  • procedurally generated worlds to explore filled with history (dwarf fortress)
  • running terrified from monsters instead of fighting them (?)
  • gritty realism in adventuring (dwarf fortress)
  • hostile enviroment (minecraft)
  • obvious difficulty and challenge, esp challenges of stratergy

anyway, just a quick rant from me... I'll watch this forum with interest.

No zombies in this one, sorry.  We will have some scary bits, but it will be relying on some enemies you've never seen before in other games.

Most of what you're looking for in your list we aim to deliver, but also bear in mind that a lot of the most strategic elements will be coming through alpha and beta, rather than being there right at the start of alpha.  Some of the scary stuff, too, but we also plan to have some scares in there right from the start.

This is still based around... craftable things, I guess I should say.  Not necessarily all items.  It's based around crafting spell gems (both emissive and augment forms), traps, weapons, and consumables.  Alden Ridge was very much about the traps to the exclusion of everything else on that list, and that's no longer the case.  We've broadened things quite a bit, but that actually allows for more options on ways to play.

In terms of primarily fleeing rather than fighting, that depends largely on how brave you are, I think.  If you want to brave the high-level (compared to you) areas, then you must run, you are absolutely pathetic compared to the enemies and they can often one-shot kill you there.  On the other hand, those that are wanting a tamer experience can stick to areas that are closer to their own level until they level up more, and then it plays out more like Zelda, where you can fight anything you see, but some things are more challenging than others.  The rewards match the level of the region you're in, so you can do what you will.

There will also be some other enemies that are completely un-killable, in some of the more hostile areas, and sometimes inside.  These ones you have to either avoid, or simply run like hell from.  Some players will learn avoid the desert like the plague, I think.  Personally I think I'll spend a fair bit of time there. ;)

To me, I think the scariest parts in a game are when the entire game isn't that scary, but when something scary suddenly happens.  When things are relatively benign and just poking along, and have been for hours, and then something terrifying happens, that contrast just absolutely is the best.

Anyway, in terms of the world and the gameplay itself, we're really going a lot less monochromatic than we've discussed in the more distant past.  Hope that makes sense!

:)  Just a thought, but 'after' AVWW, when it's like two years on and AVWW is where AI War is now, then perhaps you could still do Alden Ridge, and have the realistic art you showed before, and the top down view, and the running and the zombies?  :)

my brother plays Left 4 Dead, and i have played just a little bit, haha, and zombies are over the top, i mean, all of a sudden they are in your face and its like 'Yikes!'  :)  I can't play that kind of game for a long time, but it is interesting in small doses.  :)

Realistic art?  I think you're thinking of a different game than this: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/10/06/a-valley-without-wind-alden-ridge/

I was thinking more of the art your did in December, probably what you had already done before that, but it certainly looked very realistic to me. :)

Oops, hope it isn't too big, but it is beautiful!  :)

Ah, yeah, that was the title screen for that game -- but the only realistic art from it.  It was all pixelart other than that.

In terms of the other pieces, those were examples of my 3D art, and what you seen in AVWW is actually that very same 3D art just with a painterly post-processing on it.  A lot of the realism gets lost when you shrink it, force a faux-top-down perspective, and create sprites which inherently don't have things like ambient occlusion and other fancy effects relative to their nearby objects.

I couldn't've said it better myself.  I've been sick of them for quite some time.  It's like at some point it became mandatory to include them in every single game, movie, and TV show.  At this point, the only things that don't include them are the few that would be improved by them, like Cooking Mama, while they're unavoidable in every other genre.  They're boring now.  It sucks, because it's been so overdone that I can't help feeling slightly resentful while playing stuff like L4D or watching classic zombie movies, which are otherwise good.

And while you're at it, no generic soldiers and no space marines.

I'm actually relatively ok with those, because they're kind of fun.  I was thinking more the generic stock character from 99% of sci-fi games (particularly sci-fi FPS games) in the past several years.  On the other hand, a parody of modern video game cliches with zombie space marines and stuff could be pretty entertaining.  I suppose Warhammer 40k already has the Death Guard, though.

Actually I missed the whole 'Zombie Everything' phase, I think they are pretty cool. Still, often its not what a character is that makes them interesting or not, especially in a game, take Mario, or Sonic the Hedgehog, or Donkey Kong, or any number of characters that were interesting because of what happened in the game.

Just my own opinion, but i think Alden Ridge could be very cool with Zombies, especially the way it was discribed on Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/10/06/a-valley-without-wind-alden-ridge/

I like all the 'crafting' of weapons and tools that is mentioned, and how the zombies are resistant to normal things, so you have to get creative in how to do it.  :)  That is not a standard shooter, and really not even a standard Zombie game, but it sure as heck sounds fun.  :)

Anyway, just my opinion, but it would be cool to see.

On the other hand, a parody of modern video game cliches with zombie space marines and stuff could be pretty entertaining.

Said parody should have the zombie space marines fight werewolf-vampire hybrids. Bullet time when be used plenty, as well as having all characters try to hide when wounded so they can regenerate health (and have them point this out explicitly)
Life is short. Have fun.
