New sub forums?
« on: March 30, 2012, 05:09:45 pm »
I think we need 2 new sub forums for when this game launches and we start to see a ton of new players joining the forums. This isn't an urgent need, but I think it's needed before final release :)

AVWW Servers: A forum to discuss or share everything about multiplayer and servers
AVWW Strategy and stories: An area to talk about strategy, or to share stories of your death or triumph over your first Overlord.

AI War has similar ones and I see no reason AVWW shouldn't.

I don't think we need a servers forum, because we have an actual server listing for this game.  But, good call on the strategy and stories subforum.  That's now created!

Awesome glad I could help! Also have you though about adding the ability to create a MOTD (message of the day) for servers when players connect? and will AVWW work with steam overlay and steam friends?

will AVWW work with steam overlay and steam friends?

I can confirm it works fine with the steam overlay. I already run the game through steam all the time through the 'add non steam game' option.

And screenshots work fine as well. I like to add screenshots so my non-steam games don't look so horribly blank compared to other games.

By the way, I'm curious, for the background screenshots that are added to official steam games, does Valve just ask you to send them a few or how does that work? (Need any action shots?) ;D

Cheers!

To some of the questions:

1. Message of the day could be interesting, I imagine that would be something server admins would set?  Sounds like a good mantis suggestion.

2. The steam overlay definitely works with all arcen titles, but we don't do any particular integration with steam beyond achievements.  So you can't invite your friends to a game, for instance.  But you can chat with them like normal and say what server you both want to hop on.

3. The screenshots that Valve uses are all ones that we submit to them; in the case of which one gets used as the background, I'm not yet sure.  That was a new feature since we last had a game launch with them, and they chose one of our screenshots themselves.  But I presume that normally they let the developer choose a specific shot.

4. We're always wanting great action shots to use for our screenshots in general -- always a challenging thing, and so we can always use help!

@1: I did that after posting here and realizing that where I should have posted it anyway lol :)

@4: I think we should all get on a server and go party like it "Time Unknown due to cataclysm" and have people take as many screenshots as we can, I think that be a lot of fun for the community to get to gather to help out AVWW maybe even create a vote for our favorite for steam to use :)

The backgrounds are pulled randomly from both the Store screenshots and any screenshots you personally have taken and uploaded to your Steam Community page.

I think that only effects your library back ground and not the store page?

X4000 have you thought about handy out some e-mails to a few of the larger YouTube let's players? few examples are paulsoaresjr, TotalHalibut, and of course the dreaded Yogscast

They have several thousand followers, yogcast having over a million, which would help promote the game. They could prove a really good source for word of mouth advertising, even if they don't play it correctly  :-*

I been mention you guys on other forums I frequent regularly. Sense the newest version of Dwarf Fortress I converted well over several dozen Humans into Dwarf Hating maniacs haha :) now working on getting them to love AVWW!

Oh my bad then lol :(

Speaking of multiplayer I just ran into a big problem luckily I had a backup, but Hosting your own world and joining the server resets all your character data in single player mode http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=6959

I think the background is a random developer provided one by default (seems to pick different ones at different times), if the user has taken his own screenshots it's picked from those instead.

Also please be aware that the Hover Description text in steam is the 1st paragraph of the actual steam game description and maximal < 294 > characters long.

The hover text is the text that appears when you mouse over the game in steam store. It supports no formating, so make sure the FIRST PARAGRAPH of the game description is made so that describes the game as shortly and pointy as possible while still saying enough to make people curious. And please check how the hover text works so that it doesn't look broken, cramped or malformated or ends with a ... in a unfavorable place!

You won't believe how many developers do this wrongly

TotalHalibut

The email to get on his "WTF is..." series is [email protected]. I highly recommend doing so. The guy is great. I have found several games through his series myself

Ya he would generate a good amount of traffic for the game that's for sure.

Also a new site is up and I noticed some AVWW stuff on there first blog post picture/logo. http://indiesquish.com/2012/03/hello-world/ It will be interesting to see what they plan on doing with AVWW, special being they plan to host servers for multiplayer Indie Games :)

Cool stuff!  Thanks for the tips on the Steam page, guys; I did know that, but tend to forget it.

Regarding Yogscast we have been talking to them off and on but we want their version to be basically sparkling before we get them to fully have a go with it.  Total Biscuit / Halibut is a really great guy and he and I had a chance to skype some when Arcen was in trouble after Tidalis flopped.  I think that he's pointedly not looking at AVWW yet, since it's not yet a full build, which I quite appreciate.

I'm not personally familiar with the other LPer you mention there, but I tend to be rather out of the loop on those sorts of things and Erik may well be in touch with them for all I know.  I know he's talked to a lot of LPers about the game, at any rate.  I've passed on the information to him just in case he hasn't talked to this one! :)
