New spell ideas? Let us hear them.

Ok, so this week is mostly about new enemies. The week after? Well, the plan right now is to make that week about new spells. With that in mind, we'd love to hear any new spell ideas you guys have.

What we really want is ideas for spells that do new things. We have enough point-and-shoot spells, so, if you guys have any ideas for cool spells that do different and interesting things feel free to drop them in this thread. These could be actual craftable spells or spell scrolls.

A bullet-like spell that can bounce off of walls.  You'd be able to do some nice trick-shots with it, but unlike most spells, it would be a pretty small projectile, so you'd have to be very accurate and it'd be hard to hit small targets like Bats with.  It'd make a good Earth or Light spell.  You could make multiple element versions of this, with one being rapid-fire spammable, and another being a single, very powerful "Sniper" shot.

A constant-damage spell that keeps going as long as you hold down the button.  It's damage could start slowly increasing if you hold it on the same target for a few seconds.  This could be anything from a Water or Lightning steam to a Misasma or Flame thrower.  Obviously, this would be a good single-target DPS spell, best against larger (Easier to keep the beam on) enemies and fare poorly against crowds.

A Damage-Over-Time spell.  When you hit a target with it, they take very low damage, but a damage-over-time effect is applied that does respectable damage.  With each hit, the damage-per-second and duration of the DoT increases (Capping out after about 5 or so hits).  To get the full effect, you'd need to let the DoT work instead of just spamming it.  It would be useful in rooms of enemies, where you could DoT up multiple enemies, then dodge them until they die.  It'd be less effective against single opponents or opponents that you need to kill quickly.  This would be a nice spell for Fire or Miasma.

AoE explosion spells.  They could be either Explode-On-Impact (Exploding like a rocket launcher hit) or Explode-at-a-set-distance (Like a Flak cannon)  These would have only average DPS, but have the advantage of being able to hit multiple clumped-together targets without having to get them to "Line up" like the current piercing spells.  Fire, Water, or Lightning would be good elements for this.



Honestly, Fire needs the new spells the worst.  It has no non-knockback spells in it's arsenal that I know of, it's projectiles are generally slow, and the damage is sub-par.  I'd at least like to see that "Constant Damage" spell above made into a really sweet Flamethrower.

Also...try to have some non-knockback spells.  Because honestly, having to keep correcting your aim because your spells knock Espers around like ragdolls is more annoying than helpful and we already have enough "Splashback" type spells.

Id really like a spell that travels along walls. It will stick to a wall and travel along it regardless of gravity or trajectory, similar to that one enemy type in various 2D games where they just circle a platform over and over and over

1) Quick, somewhat weak (perhaps with a very-small-duration stun effect), rays of light (or other elements) eminating like a star in 8 direction from your body. Useable in a pinch when surrounded by enemies to give yourself a little breathing room.

2) Same as above, only charged. Either hold the button to charge and then release for more damage.

3) Pull effect spell that grabs the creature and pulls it towards you slamming into a spike that appears in front of you - powerful but with the drawback of having an enemy close to you afterwards.

4) Gravitational effect spell that lasts as long as you hold the button, damaging and heavily slowing down all enemies in a big radius but draining your mana immensely with every second of sustained usage.

5) Mana-expensive spell that turns a regular enemy against its friends to fight alongside you for a few secs.

6) Mana-expensive spell that makes a copy of a regular enemy to fight alongside you for a few secs.

7) In general, spells that cost health to sustain. 

8) Spell that grabs two enemies (one at each side), pulls them towards you as it propels you upwards, ending with an energy burst downwards at the pulled enemies. Obvious downside of falling down on the enemies immediately after.

9) Stealth. Makes you invisible to enemies but steadily drains health.

Already in the game.  Clinging Fetter.  Miasma spell.  Other varieties of it might be nice, though, as Clinging Fetter is really weak.

Already exists in the form of Blastback, Splashback, ect.  They might not be in all 8 directions, but they accomplish the same general thing.




Not trying to shoot down ideas, just saying that some of this stuff is already in the game and just needs expanded on a bit.

A spell scroll which you could buy from the store which would remove all the missions on the map and give you completely new ones at random would be nice, and give you a chance when the random generator is being a douche, rather than just waiting around. This would cost a lot of shards and I guess in multi-player everyone on the server would have to not be in a zone and on the world map or in the settlement or somthing?

I'd really like a sword spell, that would travel in a arc pretty much equivalent to a 2D Zelda sword strike.  It wouldn't let you do much that the whip or touch spells don't, but it could have a satisfying heft to it.

Also some more transformation spells.  Weren't we promised transmogrify into carp?

Nope, you guys don't have to repeat them here. BUT, if you know which tickets they are, if you could make sure their category is "Spell Ideas", that will help me immensely when it comes time to compile them into one place. If you don't do that, I'll probably find them anyway, but, that would save me a bunch of time.

A grenade sort of spell;  probably a fire type, I'd say.

As you'd expect with such a thing you'd throw it in an arc.... dunno how you'd choose how hard to throw it (or IF you'd need to), but it'd be affected by gravity, and would also tend to roll down hills.

When it's timer runs out (like, 3 or so seconds maybe?), OR, if an enemy directly collides with it, it bursts in a fairly large (as in, a good bit larger than something like the Ice Burst effect), high-damage explosion, capable of damaging background entities as well.  Possibly have it light enemies on fire?  Or not, I dunno which would be more balanced.

Something like this WOULD be pretty darn powerful, but balanced by the fact that it's mostly only used against ground foes, and not very good at all against air foes (unless you were to like, leap over them and just DROP it on them, and that would be totally up to the player).   I do think it would be pretty useful in alot of situations;  alot of ground foes are pretty dangerous, and benefits to this spell would be that it could potentially reach hard to shoot spots, as well as hit MULTIPLE enemies with it's blast.

Mid to high mana cost per use.

Ooh, I *like* this idea.  It'd be something pretty darn expensive (and very rare in stashes, like Elusion scrolls).   But this would be GREAT to have around, on the occaisions that you can manage to get one.

Attrition Field spell: fast shotl that creates a midsize field on impact that drains the health of all entities inside of it. Placing a second field removes the first or it expires after a little while. This would help guard your back in some scenarios and also deal with small interior rooms that are filled with skelebots or otherwise where you can't approach without taking a lot of damage.

Gonna steal an idea from AI War here: Implosion spell: Does more damage the higher % of health remaining.

A spell that does significant damage at night, but can only freeze enemies in place during the daytime. Companion to this one would be one that does lots of damage during the day but stops ranged attacks of the target during the day. Would create a use for nightfall and sunrise spells as well as in alternate times shutting down certain types of enemies, which could be useful.

Absolutely immense damage spell, but has a long cooldown and takes a second to start up, during which time you cannot move. However, once it finishes with the startup it instantaneously does all its damage to the highest-health target in the area.


                                                                     
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

How about charge up spells, delayed fireballs (DnD), beams, scatter missiles, also spells that when cast have a 2-3 frame delay before they fire away... and proper gravity influenced spell trails (ie, particle spawns that spawn into the simulation and don't stick to the spell effect itself);P

Butterfly missiles (missiles that follow a non-linear path) as well as cluster spells that start as a projectile and then scatter into anything that's possible.

Summon weapons (charge up bows + types of arrows) as spell

I would love this.  The Whips just don't have the same feel that a sword that swings in a downward arc in front of you would have.  Plus, Whips knock enemies AWAY from you.  A downward swing would knock them down, allowing for you to pin them in corners or "Combo" them.


I'd also like to see some "Magic" that's actually technology.  Missile Pods, Laser Beams, ect.  They talk about all that "Magic-Powered Technology", but so far, I've only seen pure Magic and Heat/Cold suits...
