The past few days saw several new feature additions to A Valley Without Wind highlighted (at least I'd say) by the addition of the store in 1.009.

Tom Chick talks to Chris for a good two and a half hours on Quarter To Three's podcast, chatting on AVWW, Arcen, some preferred genres, and gaming in general.

Also a reminder that there's still a day or so left in the SavyGamer anniversary sale. Here's the rest of the coverage that's come in this past week for AVWW/Arcen:

I have to say, your one of the few companies that would link to reviews that are not positive to your game. Everyone else will only do the reviews that are 100% starred and positive. Kudos on that :).

On the plus side, I don't think that we've had a review that was less than 7/10 that didn't have at least one gross factual misrepresentation about some aspect of the game.  So there is that. ;)

How about Eurogamer's? One major complaint from there is that the content unlocks too slowly/in too small chunks. Destructoid's Jim Sterling complained that the game loves to waste your time too much.

Eurogamer has nothing that I would call a gross facual misrepresentation, but nor had it come out when I made that statement yesterday.  However, the Eurogamer review does act like platforms are the only way to get around, when in reality there are:

- Lightning Rocket and Ride The Lightning spells (the former being very similar to the jetpack he notes the game lacks)
- Double and triple jump enchants
- The ability to turn yourself into a bat.
- Etc.

If you want to get right down to it, the statement "rhino whose sprite is clearly a composite of real-life photography" is an opinion, but a wrong one -- it's a computer-generated rhino, with photoshop post processing.  Not that that's really material to the point he was making, which is a point that thankfully others disagree with.

What can I say?  We're responding to the feedback that we can do something about.  For some of these folks, they're complaining about the very things that other reviews have glowingly fawned over.  The stature of one reviewer versus the next is... ultimately a bit meaningless when it all comes down to opinion.  Some people like it, some people don't.  We're trying to make it better for the people who like it or who are on the fence -- the people who hate it will never be swayed.

And ultimately, the net effect of the negative reviews (and positive ones, aside from Kotaku and Total Biscuit) seems to have been precisely nil on sales.  That doesn't mean we're resting on our laurels, but it means that we're listening a lot more to people who actually like the game at least to some extent, but have some things about it that are still bugging them.  If there's a persistent feeling that the game wastes your time too much, that's certainly something I'm open to looking at -- but it's not something I've been hearing in particular except from some reviewers who seemed to dislike having to play the game at all.  If you're playing something you dislike, of course you're counting every second until you can stop.

Anyhow.  It's not my place or intent to call out any reviewers.  But the reality of the market versus what some of these guys are saying just don't match up.  Neither does it match up with the sort of glowing 5/5 reviews (http://www.indiegamereviewer.com/review-a-valley-without-wind-a-procedurally-generated-genre-mashing-platformer/) that think the game is for absolutely everyone.  Terraria this ain't (and even that wasn't for everyone).  But I am thrilled that some folks are connecting to the game so positively, including some major reviewers that simply haven't posted reviews yet because it sounds like they are putting more time into the game.

This game isn't for everyone.  Neither is AI War.  But our goal with both, as always, is to make each one a better version of what they are -- so far so good, but that's always an ongoing process.

Oh, I should also add -- I think that part of the reason this game is so divisive is that the idea behind it is cool enough that everyone wants to like it.  I don't think there's anybody going into this thinking "hoo boy, I hate the very concept of an infinite world where my choices matter long term, etc, etc."  The concept is arresting to most everybody.  So that makes the letdown all that much more when the implementation (such as the very genres its blending -- shmup and platforming, for instance) doesn't match up with the tastes or expectations of the individual in question.

They were, I feel certain that they would all agree, hoping/expecting for something else other than what we delivered.  Where they and others diverge is the fact that they therefore write off the game entirely as being essentially crap, whereas others who like or love the implementation start touting it to the high heavens.  Hence: divisive.  It's very hard for anyone, myself included, to say "that thing doesn't meet my expectations and so it's not for me, but maybe it's not terrible."  I loved the first two Grand Theft Autos but felt that all of them that came after had terrible handling and in general lost everything that made the first two awesome.  Clearly a huge number of people disagree.  It is very difficult for me to imagine people finding GTA3 a fun game, as I just found it grindy and clunky and un-fun.  But there you go -- fortunately for everyone, my opinion isn't fact and all the people who love the later GTA games are free to enjoy them and Rockstar made a bundle on them.

Not to pick on GTA3, it's a bit rude of me to go insult some other developer's game, but I can't think of any other way to illustrate my point.  I was really looking forward to that game because I thought a full-3D version of what I'd loved in the top-down versions would be awesome; that made the let-down all the more bitter for me when their implementation didn't match my tastes or expectations.  That's led me to thinking of it as a bad game, even though by any rational standard it is not.  And I'm not sure, but I suspect that trying to "fix" the later GTA games to match my tastes more would make it so that the people who actually already do like it would like it less.  They have gripes of their own, I'm sure -- every player has gripes about even their favorite games -- and those are the ones the developers should be listening to, not mine.

BTW, you might want to try the Saints Row games if GTA3 was too clunky for you.

I've heard that's good -- I should give that a try at some point.  I really liked the Midnight Club 2 game for most of what I wanted to do in GTA3 anyway, though; and actually Burnout Paradise even better.  Getting out of the car some is fun, and definitely I appreciate that, but the Burnout Paradise formula was just about perfect for me.  Just wish it had local co-op so my wife and I could have played it more than we did!

On the 'idea' of this game.. it's literaly what sold it to me. I wanted to see the implimetnation, it was just so intresting not to. i had bought this game before reading any reviews, watching any trailers, or seeing more then a single medeocre looking screenshot.

My description of that idea sold it to anouther before I had loaded the game. It's /really/ cool,

I was suprised I enjoyed it so much to be honest. I was more intresred in seeing how it had been done then playing it. (I have a Masters in Computer Science and Games Development, it's intresting from a technical purspective)

Got a half dozern friends who started playing the demo, tryed some of the multiplayer. It's definatly not for everyone, needs more work in areas (Which is being done), and has a few potential early game hicups that can prevent people enjoying it (The map system, not exploring everywhere, setting goals). I've seen people love this game... on their 2nd attempt after an explination of such thing. But the raw gameplay is fun, the idea is /amazing/, and the Dev team are aprochable, constantly improving the areas that seem lacking, which is reasuring of the games potential.

Definatly looking forwards to more early game content though. 90% espers it felt like.

Now I just need to get onto working on a game at least half as intresting as this one. It's making me ansty to be developing again.

Review of top Russian game site ag.ru (site has 50 000 000 - 70 000 000 visitors every day).

http://www.ag.ru/reviews/valley_without_wind

they call it Acceptable with 65%.
That is really good for indie game. Jagged Alliance: Back in Action got there 60% and Tropico 4: Modern Times 68%, Risen 2: Dark Waters 68%. A lot of games there got from 20% to 50%.

Yikes, it seems that they are serious with their score scaling. 100% is a really, REALLY, difficult thing to even begin to approach, which IMO, is how it should be (actually, IMO, 100% should stand for total perfection, which unless you are implementing a ultra simple game like Tic-Tac-Toe, is not humanly possible).
Sadly, almost all the other review sites disagree with this, thus making their reviews seems more negative then they really are.

There's a trend toward using more of the scale these days than there used to be, at least.  So that is actually a good thing I think.
