New player with a couple questions RE the demo
« on: April 30, 2012, 02:18:54 pm »
Hey guys! Discovered AVWW today after spotting it on steam, downloaded the demo and can honestly say this is looking like one of the better games of the past few years! My favourite game type (metroidvania) mixed with procedural world generation, a more thoughtful 'long term goals' approach, and more exploration than you can shake a stick at? It's like the game I always wanted as a kid playing NES/Megadrive games, evoking memories of Metroid, Low G Man (for some reason), Kid Chameleon and others. I doff my cap to the art and sound team as well.

Having read a few posts around the forum I'm baffled by some people's disliking for it, along with people feeling lost and confused. I've found the game relatively straightforward to get into, although I'm only a few hours in.
I own AI War on steam, but have never got around to playing it - if Arcen can make 'platformers' this good, I'll definitely be giving that a shot also.

But enough gushing - quick question regarding the demo - I'm about to buy it on steam (while I've not hit any of the restrictions yet, I'd rather not have them there to hit plus the devs deserve my money) and was just wondering if the demo save file is transferrable to the steam edition? And does anyone know if the achievements I've unlocked in the demo will unlock on steam as well? I don't mind starting again for the achievements, but if I don't have to, all the better!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome! I didn't upgrade from the demo on steam, but I do know that there is no difference between the full game and the demo, just your unlock code. Everything else is the same. So your saves should have no problem just "working." Maybe someone else can give some first hand information.

The game also resends your achievement information periodically, so they should sync up too.

I don't know if this is a answer, but I hope it will keep some of the more negative post of this game from influencing your decision to buy it.

AVWW has a lot of potential and Arcen has proven that they are willing to see a game threw to its maxim potential.  I have a number of issue with the game as it is currently, however I am in no way concerned that I will not get my moneys worth of play time out of this game.  I quite suspect I will get much more than my moneys worth out of it in the long run.  Also those of us with deep issues with the game seem rather out numbered by those that love it just as it is.

All in all if you are playing the Demo and loving it, then I would say its a game you should buy, as know one can give you a better review of a game then you your self.

Yes, the save will transfer over, because, as Penumbra said, the game is the same.

That said, before you make the purchase, just in case, I would go into the application directory, then look for the directory \Runtimedata\Worlds\ , and save the world in there. I don't THINK Steam will eat it when you switch over, but I also won't promise it won't. So, save the world first, then you can just put it back in the same place if something does happen to it.

Some people using Steam have mentioned that there is an issue where after you purchase and download the game, the demo stays in the Steam games list since the demo unlocks into the full game. I think a few people uninstalled the demo and it also uninstalled the full game by mistake.
It's not too much of a problem but it's slightly annoying.

Back up your world folder as mentioned by tigersfan above in case you run into something like that.

We're really hearing that a lot, which is pretty funny, but I suppose it makes sense given a lot of the game's inspirations :)  Welcome to the forums, and I'm glad you're enjoying the game :)
