Now I know what they remind me of!  The vultures from Donkey Kong Country.  Any chance we can bounce off of them on our way up to a big bunch of bananas, er, shards?

I'm a huge fan of the eagles; so far they've been my favorite chunks to encounter.  I find they're the only enemy that makes it really feel like an accomplishment (if not a huge one) to get from one end of a chunk to the other --- others, you can basically jump over anything you don't feel like killing.  I think in general I'd really like to see more things close to classic platforming in AVWW.

My updated impressions:

Actually, I'm now finding that the eagles are an interesting challenge, and that the strange animation was caused by low framerates caused by huge amounts of eagles being spawned at once.  But I still find it odd that eagles were decided upon as the fly-in-a-straight-line enemy, instead of maybe some sort of elemental sprite or something.  I now have a question for x4000: why eagles?
It's just carriers all the way down!

My $.02.

Reduce their spawn rate some, bump up their attack accordingly, and I should be happy mostly. Maybe something can be done about the sound to make it less annoying. Maybe the full screech should only happen when a dive bomber starts to dive or hits you with a dive or something, and a smaller "bumping" sound can be used for the much, much more frequent case of hitting them normally.

I have to admit that I avoid grassland regions with excess ammounts of Eagles.

I definitely think they would work better with fewer, slower, but more powerful eagles.

I agree with the fewer eagles specifically, as well as a modified sound for strikes.  That being said, there should probably be a new enemy type that functions like the current eagles and spawns at their rate but has a simpler animation.  I'm thinking hailstones, but those couldn't really fly parallel to the ground...

Ok, I've created a Mantis issue: http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=5195

Most common complaints I've seen:

-Annoying sound
-Too many spawn at once

My personal issue that I'm pursuing:

-Eagles just doesn't make sense for this enemy type
It's just carriers all the way down!
