It is, and that does dim it very slightly -- you're right.  But the amount of dimming is not very substantial.

I'd noticed today I've been paying more attention to the detail on the characters --- I guess that's because of the outlines?  Anyway, cool.

Mostly the comments are of the throwaway variety of "makes my eyes bleed" or whatever.  Those are the ones I was referring to.

I think the stylized art wasn't so good when you had the semi-3d version. Not sure exactly why, but I think it has to do with the brain wanting to process 3d and therefore looking for more realistic looking features to go by. With the switch to 2d, the art became fabulous, because it's much more like being in a painting, and the impressionistic unrealism is a huge boon. The closest comparison would be to Braid's artstyle, except Braid worked a lot harder to achieve that style, while you guys figured out how to achieve it with some rendering and post-processing.

I appreciate that -- and it's true, when we switched to side-view the comments got all positive on the art for a while on RPS.  Just "oh noes, it turned into generic platformer!"  Which we knew was coming.  Then months passed, a few mostly neutral RPS comment threads, and then the complaining on the art started back up again. ;)

It's gotten so that I don't really know what to expect there, and suspect that nothing I do will make that crowd happy with the graphics in the main.  But that's a vocal minority, and a lot of RPS readers don't comment.  And I'm pleased with the way the game looks, and more importantly how it is improved, either way. :)
