Making glyph-transfer scrolls a little less annoying.....
« on: May 03, 2012, 09:54:13 am »
I just randomly had this idea, based on in-game  occurrances earlier.  Made a mantis thing for it, here:  http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=7474    and figured I'd also mention it on the forums and see if anyone has any thoughts on it.

Quoting directly from the mantis issue page, so I dont have to type more stuff out:

"Right now, the method of using glyph-transfer scrolls can be a little annoying. It works fine if you dont have that many people in the settlement. But as you get more and more, it gets harder to single out the exact one you want, and they can tend to sorta get stuck in little groups, and stuff like that.

Not to mention it can be hard just to figure out which one you want. Generally have to pause and mouse over each one to see the stats, which can be annoying.

Furthermore, it's easy to make a mistake here, regarding professions. Earlier I used a glyph-transfer to switch to a previously-unused character that I was going to set up a specific way with upgrades; well, I managed to get that character killed pretty fast, and then it turned out that this character has a particular profession type I needed, and was the ONLY one in the settlement with this. Not only that, it was the profession that the "seek survivors" scroll needs in order to work; fortunately I got lucky and found a random mission that produced another one, but still, that coulda been really annoying.

My suggestion to avoid these problems is to change how the transfer scrolls are used. Instead of having to actually walk around and find the right person and stand in front of them, perhaps using a scroll (as long as you're in the settlement of course) could bring up a very similar interface to the settlers list in the "continent status" thing; the one that shows each character, their stats, and their profession. An interface like that would make it very easy to choose exactly the right character, without the odd little frustrations that come from the current system, and without the chance of accidentally wrecking the one guy that can use specific guardian scrolls that you want to use."

I think that pretty much sums it up pretty well.

In addition to clicking on the scroll to bring up the interface, you could have a button on the continent status page you could click to transfer the glyph if you have a scroll in your inventory.

I think it's a very good idea. :)

Good to hear!

Also on the note of these scrolls, a quick question:

I've just hit continent 2, so I only have three people in the settlement, but I still wanted to set up a side character with high-health for dealing with wind/heat a little easier.    I go to use one of those scrolls though, and it just honks at me.   Doesnt actually TELL me anything, just makes the "cant do that" noise.

Is there some rule with these I'm not aware of?  I think in the previous continent I didn't really start using these until I'd done a couple of rescues;  can they not be used with just 3 in there, or is it a bug?

No, you should be able to. You can't if you're wearing a snow or heatsuit though, it will act as you just described. Also if you are a bat it will beep at you. Also if you try while dead it beeps at you.

Ahhhhhh, ok, it's the snowsuit then that's doing it.
