Just a few words for Arcen...
« on: June 23, 2012, 04:39:24 pm »
I just want to say thank you for creating A Valley Without Wind. Never mind what some of the negative critics out there say about the game, because I personally think that this game has got to be one of the most intriguing and entertaining games I have ever played.

I downloaded the demo off of Steam to give it a shot yesterday morning, having decided to try the game myself instead of listening to "official" reviews that spewed nothing but negativity about the game...I just had a feeling about this one. ;) Glad I did, because if I hadn't I would've missed out.

It feels like Metroid, mixed with a bit of Minecraft, and then mixed with a boat load of other genres that escape me for the moment...it's just incredibly fun to play, and I think it's the massive scope of random generated exploration that really has me hooked. Like I said, I downloaded it yesterday morning and played for hours. Eventually I needed to quit because I was getting tired and the message given to me when I quit was very appropriate.

So enough of the demo...I'm gladly slapping down 15 bucks for this one. Thanks again Arcen, it's a great game.

Oh yeah, I can't stop humming the main theme on the game's main menu. :)

From what I've seen, most of the critic reviews have been very or mostly positive. The user comment sections of said reviews are usually just "Soooo ugly" over and over (which I happen to disagree with) but other than that it's mostly good reviews.

Glad to see more people getting into the game though. :)
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Ahh, well I think what I meant were critics like IGN...Destructoid...Gamezebo...

I mean it's not nothing BUT negativity, but some of these critics are complaining about elements in the game which so far, haven't bothered me a bit.

Different strokes for different folks...you know how it is.

About the graphics, while I do agree that the default graphics suffer from some color and brightness balance issues, the game is far from ugly. I actually like how detailed even things like the mushrooms in the caves are, and how detailed many of the background textures are (well, most of them at least)

I think a big problem is that the art style is one of those kinds that doesn't "screenshot" well. You really have to see it in context. In a standalone screenshot without context, it just presents very differently, and doesn't look as good, despite it looking great in the full game experience.

True dat. Although, I do agree that some monsters (such as the T-rex), while they look good, also look really strange. Why are the T-rex and Urban robots shuffling sideways? It's not an ugly model, but doesn't make sense and is aesthetically shocking.

A few major reviewers were negative in their reviews, those might have been among them. I don't remember exactly, but in the Arcen press releases there are a ton of good reviews.

Well, the critics were looking at 1.0 of the game.  I'd dare to say that 1.1 probably triples or quadrouples the amount of content and completely revamps the gameplay.  It's almost a completely different game.

That and gamers often look for graphics and ignore gameplay and story all together. Its modern gaming really, companies think they can fool us with fancy graphics to cover up the terrible gameplay, (Steel Battalion 2) so its going to get bad reviews from just looks alone, let alone youtube reviewers who only watch a game be played, and never actually play it themselves.

One has to remember that while we think AVWW is a great game, not everyone is into this type of game. There's a whole army of very vocal CoD:ers and BF3:ers out there that won't touch anything unless it's an MMS.

Thank you for contributing to making the game better!

Sad but true.   And they seem to very much be in the majority right now.....  this is why I've pretty much stopped using the consoles altogether (and probably am just not even buying the next group).  I was tired of that type of game the moment they first showed up.

Glad I have PC/indie gaming to completely take the place of the stupid things.  I swear, the PS3 is just a damn doorstop right now.
