It is the year 888
« on: May 03, 2012, 10:49:01 am »
What does that mean? Reality just shattered, so it's a mish-mash of different time periods.

The people from the Desert region will say it's the early 4th Ancient century.
The people from Ice Age will say it's 9th Modern century.
The people from Small Town will say it's 6th Modern century.
And so on.
And all of them would be right.

The only valid way to keep time is based on an event they can all agree on, which is when the shattering happened. If it's two years after the shattering, we'd call it year 2 AS.

You are correct across the board.

However, the time period of your starting character is from 888, and since they are the most advanced humans they tend to spread their culture the most.  The structures and so forth that get used in settlements are quickly the ones from the 888 era rather than the older stuff from the bronze age, for instance.

Iirc, it's not that time itself was jumbled up, per se: it still really has been 888 revolutions of Environ around its primary since whenever they started that count.  That hasn't changed.  What has changed is the rather rude transplanting of large hunks of terrain from older (or future) "copies" of the planet.  And then it was all run through: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAl28d6tbko

Wow, I never thought of it like that. Really interesting. Will we ever get to see a seam between the chunks?

Never say never, but it's something that would be technically difficult with the way that terrain-gen works now.  It's a possibility I suppose, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort frankly. :)

I really hope so.  I'm extremely curious what the seams look like.

It could be a thing that occasionally appears in the warp holes, if entering seams on the map would be too difficult. A warp within the warp.
