Hahaha.  Almost as eclectic as pirhana plants, goombas, koopa troopas, shy guys, and the list goes on. ;)

Instead, it feels more like the devs just got high and thought up an eclectic collection of monsters.
There are many aspects of both games to which that may be the most obvious explanation.

Since everything Skelebot has been stripped out of the game I'm starting to wonder if these Robotic Research Facilities from the Time After Humans have anything to do with a certain RTS game in which a small remnant of humanity goes to war with an AI.

They already have some theme music in common.

I personally call them Android Research Stations, darn their official name.

Are you suggesting that:

- The fact that some of the enemies look like they are from AI War has some deeper meaning?

- The Time After People parts of the world are from a future (or present?) where the AI were already ruling over Humans on planets they have captured?

- There was once a planet which endured such a hefty battle between Humans and the rogue AI, that one of them (Probably the Humans since they are now called Space-Merica) resorted to using using Experimental Weaponary, which had Reality-Shattering Efects to the planet below them?

- The Llari Crystals were just fragments of the Experimental Weapon , leading us to wonder what the hell made them so chatty.;)

AND THE BIGGEST MIND-hug OF ALL:

- That maybe Valley 2's Heroes are just the start of a rebellion against the crafty AI and that after they defeated the Overlord, they set their sights to other continents until the world was purified of evil and they had gained enough knowledge from the Robotic Research Facilities in order to stretch outwards into space.

Once they managed to sieze the Planetery Command Center from the AI's grasp, they realised that whiile it started as a simple battle to reclaim the disfunctional land from the clutches of an evil Dictator, their real battle had onyl begun...this time against the AI.

...but all of that sounds like it would never happen!

The Fallen Spire campaign reveals the origins of the AI, but perhaps some of their ships were redisigned and miniaturized to work on a planet (that would explain robots that totally aren't lifted designs from AI War *cough*).

Or even better.  Maybe an AI vessel crashed on Environ and the humans reverse-engineered its systems to create skelebots and other futuristic robots.  I smell an expansion (or at least a lame fanfic).

The Fallen Spire campaign

There is a campaign?
(I thought it was an expansion)

Yep, the Fallen Spire minor faction seeds a kind of meta-campaign into an AI War game. It's wicked cool.
