like you don't have enough to do already, but really if Wanderlust:Rebirth can do it, why can't AVWW?

p.s. Looks like it is already done with tribes and enchants and the character diffs that they each start with.
Oooops, guess i didn't know.

Well, in one sense, there is no reason that AVWW can't have it.

But, in another sense there are multiple. First and most importantly being that this would be a HUGE change, requiring a lot of time. Time just ins't something we have in abundance around here at the moment.

Also, I can't think of any good way of implementing classes that doesn't basically require there to be weapons in the game, and weapons is just not something we can do, at least not any time soon.

You can already customize your character to be better at your preferred playstyle though. Which is really the whole point of classes anyway. :)

I don't think classes are necessary. Teal_Blue, I think what would be cool is if you could distill those ideas you have for Mage/Archer/Barbarian/Thief/etc and suggest them as added abilities/spells or additional customization mechanics. I for one would really like more ways to customize your character and differentiate yourself from others.

Besides, we already have classes in AVWW. People from different time zones already have unique bonuses applied to them.

I'm confused as to how the classes would remain unique during the gameplay without the devs overhauling the entire game. Unless you wanted to classify a Thief starting with less health and lowered detection or a Barbarian starting with slower movement but higher health; regardless of how it could be implemented, the game already gives you ample ways to customize your character.

I kinda figured the time periods were the game's equivalent of classes. Contemporary are the customisable all-rounders (+2 enchant slots); pre-industrial are like acrobats, fragile but capable of running vertical rings around an enemy; time of magic characters are well, good at heavy-hitting glass-cannon magic; medieval are the fighters/tanks; etc, etc.

Classes would only benefit group based play, which is something that generally never happens in AVWW.

There are right now two multiplayer servers with no one on them, and I think it's nearly primetime in the US, mid afternoon maybe. Pub AVWW multiplayer is generally a waste of time because you cannot take anything away from it. As much as I would love to play more multiplayer, the bottom line is that sooner or later the server disappears and I have to go back to my single player game which is still where I left it. Maybe there are a few people out there who have regular sessions playing with friends, but I doubt there are many.

Certain base game design features just get in the way of that sort of thing.

@snave, you may be right, i have only ever stayed at ice age characters and hadn't gotten beyond that, so you may be perfectly correct that the devs are using the time periods as a way of changing up what the characters are capable of. And one of the other players mentioned that many starting stats equate to using long range, or melee, or high strength low health, or high health low strength sorts of combinations. Which is what i originally thought that melee (short range) and mage (long range) and healer (high health low strength) would be anyway, so... it appears the mechanics and more are already in, it was just in a way that didn't say mage or warrior or archer or healer...  :)

Anyway, thank you for the posts and the answers, it helps me to understand better.

:)

I still haven't found anyone from a different time zone, so I can see how that would confuse you :P Still looking, but they're sneaky buggers.

Yeah, the NPC missions are really rare in buildings, and found uncommon underground. A good tip when underground is to look for "shortcut" doors, as they typically chain up, two to a dead end, culminating or converging upon secret mission rooms. Survivor missions never spawn on the surface and only spawn on the map if you buy or find a Seek Survivor scroll, and you can only find Seek Survivor on the surface missions. They neither spawn nor can be summoned at all on Ocean chunks, despite the Things To Do list at the green Ilari stone and in your pause menu explicitly instructing you to search there. Typically I find myself resorting to buying the Seek Survivor scroll sadly.

Incidently, one of the NPC "classes" is that of a scout and actually receives a +1 bonus to exploration. Unlock them and finding more NPCs (and unlocking more time zones) is a breeze.

What's an archer good for in a world where every peasant knows how to throw a fireball?

Arrows pierce things that fire cannot burn.
But like in practical gameplay applications, not really anything.
