Very small news, but IGN listed a selection of 50 games coming out in 2013 that are PC-Exclusive and A Valley Without Wind 2 was named. I just found it suprising since i'm sure there was like so much more games they could have took in it's place. xD

While also summing it up as:

A hybrid turn-based strategy and 2D platforming game from Arcen Games.

Little do they know Arcen Games are releasing like a bazillion more PC-Exclusives this year according to the release schedule! ;)

I was coming out here to post this very same link.  Great to see that AVWW 2 is getting some good media coverage, it's a fantastic game (so far, getting better every day) and I'm excited that it's getting some recognition on IGN.

Keep up the great work!

I don't like being a downer, but while AVWW 2 is being mentioned, it's not really being liked.

I noticed the Beta trailer just made it on IGN's youtube channel, and it's already one of the more poorly received videos out of the thousands on that channel.

While IGN and youtube are silly and stupid in general, in this case there are low budget PC indie games and iPad games that are also on their for comparison. Unfortunately, about the only videos that do nearly as bad on that channel as AVWW 2 are cheap iPad games, really cheap ones (the decent ones do much better).

It would be fine if it was just IGN, but most other places I've seen AVWW 2 mentioned echo the same thing, it's being mentioned but it's not being liked even within communities that generally like indie games.
Unless I'm really missing something, so far reception still seems rather negative.

AVWW 2 is getting publicity, but there is still very little positive reception. The game still has an image problem that has to be fixed somehow (though I'm not sure how).

It's not that the graphics are bad, it? just looks lazy as hell. Which probably spills over into other areas of the game as well including gameplay.

This is the main thing I find stupid. How can you judge gameply by how it looks? And how can it look "lazy"? O_o

Regardless of how stupid as it is, that is still a very common opinion about the game out there, and that might be a problem.

There are other games I play that get it just as bad, but a lot of those games don't need to sell that many copies in the first place so long as they sell to me and some other like-minded people the dev doesn't need to care as much what those people think.

I get the impression that is not as much the case here, which is why I bring it up.

Such an attitude was given toward most of the development of AVWW 1, and look how that turned out.
Life is short. Have fun.

-thoughts-

Sorry, I didn't want to continue the chain of quotes.

The lack of polish in the graphics is the unfortunate result of the team having to contract for the art (which can be very expensive.) There's not really a lot to be done if there's no super-talented artist on the team (as far as I know from his blog, Chris is a writer and a programmer, and only a dabbling artist at most.) That's why a game like Binding of Isaac could be hacked together in a few months and look phenomenal (not trying to insult Florian, the code was about as good as you can expect from AS2, but Edmund's art definitely made the game.)

The Metroidvania subgenre is really graphically demanding, and without an amazing artist working full time for a percentage (rather than being contracted), there are limits to what can be accomplished visually. They're going to have to stand on the gameplay, which isn't going to translate well in a trailer (especially this gameplay.)

Arcen's best bet, from where I'm sitting, is really networking as best they can prior to release. Get TotalBiscuit to take a look at the sequel while it's still in beta, get NorthernLion, as many of the Youtubers as they can get onboard.

Yes, TB should have a look at the sequel seeing as he played the first and found it "Odd". But WHEN he should take a look is another thing because if he took it while in beta, it would not really be a 1.0 Look at it and with Arcen, quite a few things can change in that time.

I'll be honest, the current trailer isn't exactly the most flattering to put it politely.

And I agree that getting youtubers to play the game will be the best bet in terms of advertising. Though don't want them to do that too early, better to wait on that until the full release.

I agree entierly on the timing thing. Getting it to people early is one thing (though technically he already has it since he has AVWW1), getting useful reviews out of beta products on youtube is another thing entirely.
That and updated trailers to some degree, for example the ancient Witch trailer for Path of Exile looks terrible and the UI is completely different, but skip ahead to the Open Beta trailer and it doesn't look bad at all in comparison.
