I do not get the strategic game
« on: November 29, 2011, 05:57:51 am »
I really don't.  I've wound up just not touching it except for scouting, but that's fairly annoying too, as you're constantly running out the various shards you need to do it, and it's pretty hard to play without it ---  I played for weeks without knowing about an overlord right near one of my settlements, which wasn't great.  So I'm going to try to explain my problems with it, and hope that either someone can confirm that they're real or explain to me what I'm doing wrong.

So I think I'm probably doing something wrong, but it seems to me like it's a pretty punitive system.  I managed to get my home settlement built up to the point where I could build furniture factories before the new rainbow shard system, but then even with two wood bonus areas in range of the town and two lumberyards (one with a "bipedal chainsaw), and still it took turns and turns to get enough lumber to build one chair.  Now, with the new shard system, it seems like it would be a nightmare to find and set up adequate supplies of them for all the various towns in my range.  On top of all this, the resource system that gives separate stocks to each town and the player adds an extra layer of irritation when I have a ton of wood or yellow shards but none in the settlement where I have free characters and then I have to click through a bunch of menus to move them.  I'm also baffled by turns --- I feel like I'm doing something wrong if I just click through five to build up time units for scouting, but it doesn't seem like there's anything else I can do.

Something which would be great, if someone has the time, is a walkthrough to setting up a settlement with a decently self-sustaining economy.  I'd be glad to give it a shot if I knew how --- but I gotta say I've found trying to figure it out myself with the current mechanics totally infuriating.

A couple responses:

1.) I know we say this a lot, but, there is a lot more coming for this part of the game. Keith has spent a lot of his time recently (well, all of his programming time, actually) on multiplayer, but that is getting to the point where he can focus more on other things (like this) very soon.

2.) Make sure you have a well in your settlement. With out a well, the NPCs moral is capped very low, and they don't get a lot of work done, and build up TUs very slowly. Also, make sure they all have a house assigned to them.

3.) Making a guide/walkthrough to this would be beneficial, but, perhaps it would be better to wait till that part of the game is a bit more fleshed out.

Fair enough!  Anyway, it does sound like a few players at least are into this side of the game; I'd appreciate any other tips.

The quick and dirty:

0) You have to man things by hand, to give someone a house, you have to assign them it, to give them a job you have to assign them it. Make sure to right click on things as some can be upgraded (you can also assign from there instead of just left-clicking on the building)

1) Build a well, houses for everyone and farms (cut down trees and smash boulders for materials)

2) Get some wood and stone production, you don't need to much to begin with, but you'll want at least 100 income on wood and stone as soon as possible.

3) Scout, build wind shelters (that's how you get more people!), liberate resources and link nodes and stuff (kill boss enemies and then on the world may they are available to link or whatever)

4) Once you've built up a bit, go to all your wind shelters so that you know there are people to rescue. Rescue them all (building farms and manning them as necessary), and build them houses and workplaces, and keep going.

That's about all there is to the strategic game right now, it starts off slow, but then you'll find yourself with huge stockpiles soon because you have 30 settlers and you have no reason to build any of the limited things.

One thing to note here. Be careful linking to nodes of consciousness shards, as doing so will increase the frequency of the rampaging monsters heading towards your settlement.

Didn't know that one, explains some things for that.

Thanks for that!  Sounds like it's going to be moot quite soon with the missions, tho.

I must say I was unbelievably frustrated by the flat out lack of information offered about this section. It needs more!

Let me outline some things that I did that worked out great for me.

Pre stage: Get to level 6. Don't even worry about level 3, focus on getting to level 6. It's silly that this is backwards, as scouting is largely based off of Settlement Management. A suggestion, unlock these at the same level! When you are at level 6, speak to the Hearth Stone

The first stage to getting a good economy is maximizing your morale.
  • Defeat bosses and avoid casualties (defeating overlords gives you insanely high morale bonuses)
  • Build a well (You have to enter the settlement management tab Look for it when you are under your strategic map, it's in the top right corner!)
  • Make sure every single person has a house!
  • Make sure you are making enough food to sustain your population (The food number will be BLUE if you are making more)

The second stage is gaining a population to work with. The bigger your population, the more you can do in one turn. You might want to do this step before some of the steps listed in the first stage. You need 200 time units available to 'recruit' another person to a city. You can find people in two different places, to my knowledge.
  • At windmills. This is the fastest way to recruit, as there is often more than one person at a windmill, and you can quickly reach them.
  • At the Stones found underground. There has always been a person at those stones when I've checked.

The third stage is creating the production facilities to have your population work. At this point, look at your population and see their traits. Highlight each trait to get an understanding of that character. Keep in mind characters who have traits that improve a resource. This will increase your production by A LOT if they are working at their proper facility. When they finally come out with switching the essence (that is you?) to a new character, I would suggest a terrible and painful ending for every character with a useless trait ( :P )
  • Build enough farms if you haven't already. Remember, just enough to get it to blue.
  • Use your workers to collect material from the Settlement Management area. You can actually select a character with time units and have them clear a granite or tree icon from your grid, and it also gives you resources. This is not explained! This does take red conscious shards.
  • When you have enough for a woodcutter's workplace or granite quarry, build one. Then build the other. NOTE, they take A LOT. You will have to burn though a few turns to get these. You could also go out and farm them, if you're a masochist of sorts.
  • Make sure that ALL workers are at 0 (or as close to 0 as they can be) before ending a turn. This ensures maximum efficiency per turn (which as of now is really only an issue if you're short on blue shards).
  • Personally, I get 4 of each woodcutter's workplace and quarry, and 2 of each lumber mill and stonecutting.
  • A warehouse increases output!

The fourth stage involves scouting out the area around you and finding resource nodes. When you find one, go to that area and kill the boss. When you do, that area becomes 'unlocked, and will now provide you with more supply. The catch, it only works with areas that are three squares away from your own (I don't know if this applies diagonally or not, I haven't had the opportunity to try)

You also have the option to secure concious shards. My advice is not to do it unless you are REALLY hurting for those shards (a queue to go out and adventure, really) or you are trying to draw monsters to level quickly.

Well, as I said, I'm not opposed to offering more information on principle, but I'm not sure anyone should spend too much time with it right now as it's likely to change significantly soon.
