: How deep can you go?
: @B0FH September 29, 2011, 02:56:27 PM
I got scared after going into an underground cave, that then led to "deeper caves", which in turn did the same (and once more before I realised I was low on warp spells and left it).  Is there a cap on how deep things go? or is it down to the RNG?

No cap!  There's a functional limit in terms of how many dungeons are comfortable to see on your screen in the region map all stacked up, but that's it. ;)

I may have myself later for saying this, but I feel like there might be some value in limiting the maximum depth somewhat. Not a hard limit, necessarily, just have there be a random chance that a dungeon won't lead to a deeper one.

I found it really exciting when I first found an entrance to a deeper cave in the cave I was exploring! And that one had an entrance to an even deeper cave! ...but that excitement wore off as I realized that every cave led to a deeper cave.

Buildings aren't infinitely tall, and I find the really big, tall buildings exciting to discover and explore. I suspect that finding a deep cave in a world of variable-depth caves would be fun and exciting in a similar way, as these would be the places you would expect to find some really good loot. It would give players reasons to move around the world map a bit more too.

Depending on the region type, there actually is a random cap.  It's not infinite in every cave system, but some can be.  Should have clarified.

Oh, cool! Thanks for the clarification. Makes my 4-level cave seem cooler now. I wonder how deep it goes...

If I recall correctly around lvl 4 or 5 in mine terrain changed.

I wander if you do deep enough (with 100's of wooden platforms) there will be a big sign:
"Here be dragons"

Yeah I just got to a cave with lava instead of acid water, very red all round.

On that note, can I assume at some point there will be more to the depth changes than just colour, like different monsters and materials and such like, you know some tangible benefit to going down that far? maybe even an increased incidence of gems alongside a difficulty spike

The difficulty goes up every dungeon down you go.  And the prevalence of wood platforms goes down, too.  There should be none left by now in your delving.  Other differences would of course be coming with time.

For the record I was already aware of the level increase, but it seems to be a flat +1 level per deeper dungeon, I was suggesting there should be a say 3+ level jump as you get into a new "layer", something to give you the sensation of pushing your luck by delving too deep

I gotcha.  And yeah, more variance later would be good.
