Holy Moly Amoebas
« on: September 30, 2011, 09:21:08 pm »
The first possibility is that I'm terrible at this game. I can live with that, really. However, the second possibility is that these amoebas are brutal! Wave after wave of blue pulses (which I find a little *cough* difficult to dodge due to the frequency and general pulsiness), plus if they touch me...dear god my HP!

Is anybody else having trouble with the general nastiness of these things?

And I feel like the Giant Skelebots are riding the other end of the spectrum - way too easy. Ride the lightning - ice cross - repeat, and those guys are dead.

I've also been thinking that amoeba movement is kinda weird...given the general "amoebaness" of them. I think it'd be cool for them to float freely (as they do now) under water, but when in towers/land I think they'd have a bit more flavor if they "stuck" to surfaces. That is, instead of flying about, they "rolled" along surfaces, up walls, and across ceilings.

I have to agree with you there. Amoebas are insanely difficult, especially if you are caught indoors in a RC tower. Christ, I died four times trying to kill a single amoeba and it was lvl 4 while I was 5. I admit, it might just be because I completely suck at platformers, but they certainly seem incredibly unforgiving. Especially since their shots stack up and remain for a long time. Moving around without dying while dodging both shots on the floor/walls AND incoming shots can be insanely difficult. Especially if you are so close to the amoeba that you can hit it with your spells.

Any advices would be sweet, because I have a tower full of them and I've only managed to kill two yet, in spite of wasting 4 characters to do it. (And yes, the bloody ghosts don't help either xD)

Yeah, I had the same boss-and-ghosts problem eventually. That makes those towers terrifying. That tower is effectively off my to-do list for now!

It requires a bit of luck since the projectiles come out too fast to avoid (at least talking about this red amoeba lieutenant I killed recently) so the hits you take mostly depend on how many bullets the amoeba decides to spit out in each attack. I've noticed that right below the amoeba is your best bet as shot numbers divisible by 4 seem fairly rare. Then just hold down the mouse buttons for the white cutter and whatever other ranged spell you use (in my new world I'm using ball lightning and the cutter, probably the highest DPS option). Ghosts go down to that spell combo fairly easily but you need to down them before you're cornered by them and their miasma.

I had a thought this morning, though I don't have the spells to test the hypothesis. Perhaps someone else can confirm. Head over to the skelebot graveyard, shrink down a bunch of shipping crates (I don't have shrink). Then, take those into the boss fights, regrow them, and use the barrier spell (I also don't have that one). It should give some nice cover to pop out and take shots, but I need to go book-and-resource hunting to try it out.

I doubt that'd work and even if I'd expect the amoeba to tear through your cover in split seconds.

Even the red amoeba's attacks are completely dodgeable.

The trick is figuring out HOW.

Hint, watch the angles.    Even when it sprays it's maximum amount of bullets at once, there are points underneath it where you can stand to avoid it's attacks.  BUT, you have to keep in mind it's movement, which can change just WHERE those safe points are.

Also, watch the distance.  The further you are from the thing, the better;  this is where good knowledge of the surrounding area is key.   Learn where the maximum effective range of your attack is (preferrably something like Energy Pulse), and try to stay at that range.   And if the thing starts to move towards the floor, move even further away from it, even if that means going out of range.  Dont attack it if it isnt high above you.

Those are the tips I can think of for dealing with these.   I went through a tower last night that had nothing but the red amoebas, and in all honesty, I didn't actually get hit all that often.

I have to agree with Misery, the amoebas are hard but totally beatable form experience with both the standard an giant versions, although I haven't faced the red ones yet. I think keeping a safe distance is key. Look at the health bar at the side of the screen to get their general position, that way you can stay out of harm’s way and still throw boulders at them.

The really low level ones went down really easy to death touch it seems.

The ones with more hp, staying at long-ish range makes it dodge-able. You just need something that can reach them and somewhat accurate and you're ready to go.  :)
