Granite :(
« on: September 27, 2011, 03:46:45 pm »
So, I spent all of my resources on houses and farms at level 6.  I have about 20 granite and have no clue how to get more in order to build guilds.  I also have very few logs but at least I can gather those pretty easily, as far as granite goes I can only find deposits that hold one granite ore and they are very hard to come by.  Is there another way I can come by some granite or am I pretty stuck?

Btw, the game is awesome!

Right now, there isn't a whole lot you can do, but I believe the quarrier's guild is unlocked at level 7, so you can build those soon.

If you don't have enough granite to build the granite mining building, find another settlement somewhere out there, take some of its granite, and give it to the granite-poor settlement :)

So there is a way to manage resources between settlements? I have a few that I've built windmills in if that's what you're talking about, could you tell me how to do that or if those even count as settlements?  Thanks for the fast responses and the help!

If you mouseover a resource in the stockpile display in the upper-right of the strategy or settlement-management interfaces it will say among other things "Right-Click to view details and advanced actions", if you do that you'll see a small detail window that describes the resource and gives you some buttons for taking or giving quantities of that resource.

I'm not comfortable with it being so easy to move goods between settlements, but for now I'm erring on the side of it being doable rather than impossible ;)

I was in the same situation and while I did find another settlement to pilfer the materials from eventually, it took me about 6 levels to do so in which my settlement was stagnant and I couldn't do anything much in the macrogame. I'm only now climbing out of that.
I still think it'd be an improvement to decrease the Granite cost of the Quarriers' Guild for at least the first time you build it, just because Granite is so much harder for players to gather than Cedar is.

On the matter of what makes a settlement, I have a kind of strange case where I found a potential wind shelter site with a Hearth Guardian stone, and built up the shelter. The Hearth Guardian stone now talks about it as a settlement, and I can press confirm on him to enter the strategic map, but there's no strategic UI (just the map, with non-scouted regions greyed out etc.). Two people live there but I can't give them orders. Can I build that up as a settlement later, or is it a bug or what?

Yea, the macrogame isn't really balanced at all right now, I'm kind of surprised people are playing it beyond the "oh, neat, not used to seeing one of these in an adventure game" phase ;)

It's a bug in that I never told it to not consider that a settlement case.  Later you'll be able to build that into a full settlement, yes.

Honestly, buildings requiring their resource to build fall into a peculiar trap. In one settlement, I tried to build enough houses and farmed to feed and house everyone, and then ran straight out of wood. But it costs something like 200 wood to build a woodcutter's building..

What about changing it around a tad? It would require none of the resource it requires to build to build a level 1 building (so a level 1 woodcutter's shop could be fairly cheap, basically only requiring labor), but its also fairly ineffective.. then upgrading it, which costs wood, would yield what you have now.

The important part is that you are able to gather the resource without having the resource - If you never can build a granite thing because you spent all your granite, there should be a way to recover from that in a purely city-building sense, not requiring adventuring to other settlements.

I've almost fell in the pitfalls Lancefighter and Magos told, luckly i've had enough granite and wood to make both resource buildings... unfortunately, they develop quite slowly, and I don't have a clue on how to put my NPC's to get the deposits scattered on the strategic map.

Yes, as I said it's not balanced really at all right now, there are various things planned that will make it possible to get significant quantities of a given resource without needing significant quantities of that resource.  Just other things, like blood, sweat, tears, etc ;)

Its either that, or change around the resource numbers so that the player actually can feasibly collect enough wood to build it without tearing his hair out :p

I found an orange stone in one of the windmill semi-settlements and have no clue what it does or why it is there, any ideas?

For 0.502 I've changed the tooltips for the resources, resource deposits, and resource gathering buildings to hopefully be clearer about some of the stuff that's confused people.

Hopefully I'll have time soon to work on the actual mechanics and provide more options for digging yourself out of holes (getting into them if you weren't aware/planning-ahead is quite intended, that's half the fun!), but at the rate of bug reports it's not going to be very soon :)

I also hit the granite issue. And my settlement is kind of stopped.

If I can't find any settlement spot and I'm hit by the between levels map generation issue my settlement is kind of stuck until I level up?

PS.
Do I need to fully scout to find possible settlement location or it will be recognizable at once (wandering if I missed it)?

You'll recognise it at once. I found my second settlement before I got above level 2.
