Buildings and professions?
« on: July 05, 2012, 12:16:50 pm »
I've looked at the wiki, Google, and searched this forum for an answer, but I either can't find anything or really can't get anything clear. Would somebody please help me understand this?

How do buildings and NPC professions work? If I put down a lumbermancy tower and have a lumbermancer NPC, is there some menu I can go into to see what they can produce from it?

If not, what do NPC profession skill levels do?

Thanks for any help.

If you're looking at the latest beta version, right now the answer is: nothing. :)

It's a bit of a transitionary phase.  The next beta version, to come out tonight, introduces Dispatch Missions for NPCs and therein lies the answer to your question.

I'd like to give this thread a bump. The buildings and NPC's _do_ stuff again, but I'm having a hard time tracking it down. Can't seem to find it in the Encyclopedia or the Wiki, and I don't know if either of those is really going to be updated for 1.2. Some of the building descriptions include bonuses for certain professions, but then I don't know what those professions are for, other than using specific guardian scrolls. Aren't they supposed to provide some continent-wide bonuses or something?

You're in luck!  I just wrote a comprehensive guide on it today: http://christophermpark.blogspot.com/2012/07/strategy-guide-for-citybuilding-in.html

Please let me know if there are any remaining questions with it!

Since that post seems to cover citybuilding in general...

Is there somewhere where the different survivor moods and temperaments are actually (and what effects they have on the survivor who has them) explained? It seems like something that should be in the Big Honkin' Encyclopedia, but I couldn't find it.

In terms of the internal mood and temperament mechanics: that's mysterious on purpose. It doesn't have any hearing on gameplay, so long as you look at the cumulative mood points. So explaining the internals of it would only serve to undermine the illusion of personality rather than actually helping with play.

So if I'm reading it right, currently NPC profession doesn't really make any difference? A lumbermancer and a forgician are exactly the same except that each one likes a different color of book? I assume this is one of those things that's going to need further changes to make it interesting again?

Edit: I wasn't trying to be snarky and say it's not interesting overall, just the variation in professions is all I was talking about. :)

My understanding, from the dispatch mission screen, is that the professions give skill bonuses for matching characters - each dispatch material has a different professions stated.

Professions matter in he following ways:
-bonus to certain mission types (big advantage)
-need a specific kind of profession book
-need specific kind of profession building
-only cares about average skill of others of same profession when getting grumpy about being over-skilled.
