Exploration, for the completionists!
« on: May 23, 2012, 03:27:15 pm »
I noticed its kinda a pain in the Rumpelstiltskin to actually see (happened to me on Continent 1) the entire continent, covered in Visited locations, and not remember if i actually 100% the area or not, since even going in for a mission, marks the place as visited. What I'm suggesting is maybe there could be "Explored" or have Visited in red, and when 100% scouted and caves spelunked to its fullest, change the Visited color to Green, or a check mark in the box. Though I'm not sure if this is the right section of the forum to suggest this, let alone me not being the only one who has the ADD equivalent of Short Term Memory. That and I'm sure itll make the Micro-managing aspect of the game a little less pen-paper.

Frankly, you're not supposed to explore a region 100%, let alone explore all of them to 100%. While adding that checkbox would have no impact on things, I wonder if it won't mean people think there's a reason to explore them to 100% "since that checkbox is there". It's fine to have it as a personal goal, but I'm not sure it should be a goal game-wise.

it would be more of a resource kind of thing, since it feels a bit crunch to hunt for resources when you want to get stuff up a level

I'm not a completionist, but I run into a similar problem.  A lot of time I just go into a region for a mission, not resource gathering or exploration, and it is hard to know if you've been in the region more than a few steps without entering each one.

I'd propose, if possible, 2 additional statistics shown on the region info; How many chunks horizontally you've visited, and the deepest level of cavern reached.

That would be very helpful. Completionism is clearly madness, in this game, but it's certainly easy to lose track of where you've been and what you've done!

Maybe it would be nice if we could attach little notes to regions.

It would help with remembering regions you might want to come back to (among other things) while at the same time not encouraging completionism.

Actually, that's the best solution I've seen. Simply letting a player make notes on the world map, or even on map chunks, would be a great help.

Already planned, I believe.

by the looks of it, they are mostly discussing the plan for a different method, that involves showing secret missions, but the concept rides the same in a way, minus the identifying the secret missions part.

That Mantis issue isn't terribly relevant, actually, other than that it was closed because the notes feature is already on the developers' list - I think!  :)

I agree with OP. I'm a bit of an over-explorer and i'm generally a completist when it comes to games. Heaven knows i wasted a good few hours just exploring every building in site  :'(

If an area could show "% scouted/Cavern Depth" instead of just "Visited" as well as giving players the ability to drop tags/notes, that would be freaking sweet :D
I'm probably typing this on my phone. Sorry if it seems short or disjointed :(
