Do we need totally useless equipment items in the game?
« on: February 05, 2013, 04:03:22 am »
So again, got the latest update, created a new world and embarked on the very first tile. Within the first screen I pick up the equipment on the screenshot attached.
When this awesome piece of equipment is on you basically can't move. Well you can move vertically, by jumping but you can't move horizontally.
Unless I'm sorely mistaken, this piece of equipment is not situational, it's outright useless, since you can't really play the game with it equipped. Do items like this *have* to be in treasure chests at all?

I would have to agree with the OP. With the direction this game has taken, it really doesn't need Roguelikey items anymore. I'm all for 100's of random items, but in this case I'd prefer if the game had set item types with set bonuses for their rarity level, rather than having these ad/disad item sets.

Also, something that could be done to incentivise the use of lower-rarity items is to give them slight higher durability compared to the rarer, more powerful item types?
I'm probably typing this on my phone. Sorry if it seems short or disjointed :(

I look at them as collectables for the achievements.

Plus, they put a remove equipment button in for those situations.

True, but I think the point the OP is  trying to make is that maybe the game should just do away with "junk" items altogether. Also, I think the idea of hunting and dropping junk items for the sake of achievements is pretty lame :p

I only do it as I love collectables and they did away with the energy cans from the first game. I try to make do with my collecting addicting. :P

And I think they have their benefit as they allow short-term benefits most of the time and even a diferent way to play if you get the low-health, 800% damage ones. :P

Agree with the original poster. I've also found an item that gave me something like -95% health, with a +% to ammo. The minuses on those sorts of items just need to be adjusted. That minus movement speed one is really annoying as well, I've picked it up before.

I think the randomized stats on the items are a good idea......

....but perhaps change the ranges that those stats can be within.   I mean, a piece of equipment that lowers your movement speed in exchange for boosted power isnt a bad idea, but nobody is going to pick one up that reduces it by 100%!

Just make the maximum/minimum numbers for all these items more.... sane.... and I think it'll work out nicely.

Right. Wasn't suggesting losing disadvantages, but things like -100% particle lifetime are a tad much ;)

Yeah, I think there should be caps in place which allow you not to get completely stuck.

Being able to drop equipment means you won't ever get stuck. But it's still lame to find something so objectively useless.

Ok, this is like only an opinion, but I rather like having the -.+ mechanic. I like how it forces me to consider the down side of a treasure, in order to get at the other side of the choice. Currently the only draw back i see, is that it is possible to go back a level and kill re-spawned enemies to raise health instead of making the difficult choice.

If that re-spawn could be delayed until the end of the level then these choices would not seem to be useless, but useful, just with a  difficult weighting of the drawbacks versus the benefits.

From plus or minus 20 to 80% ?  Or is that range to small? Or too much?

Certainly the ranges now, being very extreme really make the choices hard to make, if i know that i have to lose most of my health for a devasting ammo boost.

Actually, to be honest, i rather like the extreme way the treasure chests are now. If we make them 'reasonable' then honestly, it makes it less extreme and less fun.

At least that is my opinion,

I can personally agree with the treasures being extreme is very nice. In most RPG style games I always feel like equipment doesn't really do anything because it is so gradual. I very much like the completly game changing way equipment works here.

I like the items that give you a big boost in attack power and set you on fire, because then you have the chance to go on a rampage until you lose it. It's rather refreshing in short bursts.

Found one of these today. Quite exciting while it lasted, although it was pretty dangerous to use.

Actually, I could have just dropped it if I came that close to death. Didn't occur to me at the time, though.

I quiet like them the way they are now, but those silly ones like "-100% Movement" definitely need to go. All the others I've found have seemed to be fine though.
