Cool Random Facts About AVWW -- Help Us Explain This Game!
« on: February 16, 2012, 10:53:41 am »
This game is obviously hard to summarize.  I mean, we can -- and do -- summarize it.  But the problem is, any summary necessarily leaves out a ton of stuff that makes the game cool.  Not listing every last feature is great, because we want players to have a sense of surprise and excitement as they explore through the world.  But having basically brief few-sentence anecdotes that are particularly illustrative of what makes this game unique would be helpful.  Not with a goal of making someone understand the game mechanics better, mind, but with a mind toward making them interested in the world itself.

All of these would need to be fairly brief bullet points that we could use in our store copy on places like Impulse and Steam, to pique the interest of players.

For example:

* Monsters migrate -- as the struggle for control of a continent rages on around them, dinosaurs creep out of the lava flats, icicle leapers leave their snowbound origins, and so on.

I'll continue to update this list as we get a good selection of things like this.  But to some extent, once again, I'm a bit too close to this to really be able to think of which aspects are particularly cool to a new player.  That's where, if you guys have any thoughts on the matter, we'd certainly appreciate it!

Okay, I think the points that attracted me the most, without writing an details are :

-beautiful 2d render world
-gameplay old school renewed on each continent (new game / advancement )
-crafting spells and items: loads of spells and leveling them.
-inventories and enchantment
-cities management
-development of your civilization
-extensive and massive ever changing world (and expanding)
-combination of sci-fi and fantasy universe
-free roam and explore the world for materials and bonuses or accomplish diverse missions to improve the life of your citizen
-strategic elements and management/planning
-so many different enemies and environments
-role playing elements
-craft and change the world
-high replay value thanks to randomized worlds
-character customization
-easy to play with a learning curve as the world "progress"

I also would like to add deep storyline and background informations on the world... Though we don't have much yet.

And there's so many great little things here and there that would deserve to be said but that are probably insignificant from a marketing point of vue.

The greatest is certainly the world'size that give that feeling that it will never end and that we can play forever... A bit like games like the elder scrolls.

I don't know if it helps like this but there's so much to say !

I havent played yet, but I'm a detail oriented person, so the type of things that would appeal if I were shopping the game descriptions, would be a series of very short, factual, concise (3-9 words) bullet points indicating the different types of gameplay contained within the game.

That was the major reason I bought AI war back in the day (aside from the fact that it was on sale). I knew nothing about the game, but I remember the description stating that the gameplay consisted of elements from a wide variety of other strategy games all wrapped into one package. I felt that with all those different gameplay elements, there had to be something about the game that would appeal to me regardless of the presentation/visual package, or budget of the title. I did not buy the game based on screenshots, fluff about the story, graphics, or descriptive accounts of the battles.

I know there are different personalities, and different things apply to different people, but to be brutally honest the "example" bullet point you mentioned doesnt appeal to me at all. That kind of bullet point could be said about any game regardless of the quality of development or type of gameplay. Since it is an indie title, I think the bullets should cut straight to the chase as far as what kind (or kinds) of game it is, rather than trying to apply descriptive fluff. People like myself need to know what kind of game they are buying, and are not turned on by salesman-like descriptions of individual game situations, like things raging and creatures popping out of unusual places. To me, those kind of bullet points boil and filter down to "Its a game, things happen in it".

Anyway, just my two cents. I know there are a lot of people with different "buying personalities", and not everything appeals to every type. Looking forward to purchasing the game and trying it out as soon as I finish another game of AI war or two.  :)

Something about Arcen should definitely be in there; a lot of what attracts me to Arcen titles is how quickly they change in response to player feedback and balancing needs --- and the way they just seem to keep growing indefinitely.  It's like buying a subscription more than a game.

Agreed, I think Arcen Games itself is a selling point.  :) I do plan on buying all future Arcen titles strictly because of the support and attention the titles receive.

We appreciate it :)  But advertising that is tricky to do without sounding pretty insufferable ;)  Also, the level of ongoing support at any given time can be pretty variable (we had to largely leave AIW alone for much of AVWW's development, etc) so it's not like we can "promise it on the box", etc.

These are good points, HellishFiend -- that's what I've always done in the past, but I guess I worried that was getting a bit too concrete.  A lot of other developers (even indies) tend to focus on the experience rather than the actual core things.

For instance, how would one market Half Life 2?  Presuming it was an unknown thing, and not yet GOTY from that year, etc.  On the one hand, you could say:

- 8 guns, including a physics gun.
- Several interactive allies that you can give basic orders to.
- Mysterious story spread out over 12 chapters.
- Several vehicle segments.
- Gunplay that feels tight, and graphics that are state of the art (for the time).

And that's all fine and well, but it wouldn't really sell me on Half Life 2.  It just sounds like another entry in that genre, because most of those things are things that are, to greater or lesser extent, in every game in that genre.  But instead, another way to go would be to try to sell the game based on the experience it provides, which seems to me a lot more to the point for that particular game:

- Waking up lost and alone in a dystopian society, aid the rebels in any way you can.
- Travel cross country on foot and in rickety buggies, past burned-out houses and through dangerous deserts.
- Pick your way carefully through zombie-infested tunnels and an entire town overrun by horrific creatures.
- Return with power to City 17, through intense squad firefights in the streets, in hopes of destroying the combine threat once and for all.

All of the above on that one hints at both story and game mechanics, as well as the sorts of environments you'll be exploring.  It sounds like a singular fun time, standing or failing on its own merits, versus trying to pick bread A or bread B based on their respective nutritive qualities.

So... I'm not really sure.  It may be that we need to do both.  In our descriptive text, which it sounds like HellishFiend you would ignore, it might be that we need to sell the story/world/environment in the way that the second half life example attempts to.  But then when it comes to the bullet points, we might need to stick to some more concrete facts, such as what your objectives are and how in general you go about achieving them -- what kind of game even is this, some one new wonders? -- etc.

I would say you should promote the story and a couple of the thing you can do like crafting and the fact that you can really influence the world.

One thing that most poeple search is to get enough for their money, that's my main concern when buying a game ! You pay 60 bucks for a game you finish in 8 hours or less... Seriously ? Ya there's maybe a multi to make it longer but it's not like promoting an unreal tournament game! And 60 bucks for 8hours or less is truly a rip off that makes me way angry :(
So, I'd definitely advise open huge world ever extending with great replay value.
With it, multiplayer possibilities up to so many players.
I think just those two are great marketing lines especially for the price you pay, most players nowadays get ripped off for price / quantity and they're angry about it ! I can tell for sure.

A sentence that always appeal me is : unravel the mysteries of the world.
I don't know if it will be the case here but it looks like it wil be. It just gives an idea that you can pass the story line or just search intensively for details hat will tell you more, you will have an objective to start searching for clues about what is happening and where it all comes from.

An indie game that truly amazed me in every way but was poorly advertised was Aquaria, this game was gorgeous, enchanting music, interesting story line... That game was a pure delight from start to finish ! But it never got the success it really deserved :(
I really hope AVWW will get all the success it deserves !

I rarely ever even read those things, aside from to figure out what genre I'm in for and whether there'll be monsters, robots and/or spaceships - so I'm not really the best person to ask!

But I will say this: I just had a look at the Steam info for AI War base game and it massively rekindled my love for that game.

Hmm...

* Fast-paced 2D action with intertwined with a procedurally generated and endless world.

* Explore surreal landscapes and twisted interiors in an apocalyptic setting, finding supplies to augment your spellcasting or settlement along the way.

* Enhance your abilities and transfer your glyph from one person to the next, cultivating a community of warriors and explorers, or place all of your eggs into one basket and maximize the potential of a single character. Each time period offers survivors with different strengths.

* Three kinds of bats!  :P

AVWW is not an easy game to define, I've noticed. In general games that are so non-linear are difficult to write synopsises for.

Something else noting how the game has evolved due to the interaction between developers and players. Always my favorite thing about your games, yet it's the hardest thing to convey to someone who isn't familiar with you guys. Too bad you can't just put "Seriously, we patched the game nearly every day. That's how awesome we are."

IMO, these are pretty good, but I'm not sure we should mention the glyph, as someone who hasn't played the game won't know what that is. For the third one, maybe something like "Enhance your abilities, while cultivating a community of warriors and explorers. Or place all of your eggs into one basket and maximize the potential of a single character. Each time period offers survivors with different strengths."

These are all great!  I wish I had read it about an hour ago before I went to my local Gamestop and shared the game info with the folks there.  It was a bit hard to explain why it was so great, but I think I convinced a few people that it's worth the time to purchase it and figure it out.

Great explanations here though, really helps me to explain it to people when they ask "So what is this game all about".  And yes I don't mind shamelessly plugging it everywhere I go because I really think it's THAT good, and worth at least trying out.

Keep up the good work!
