Concerns about content unlocking.
« on: April 25, 2012, 01:22:20 am »
Does anyone think that not enough content is unlocked from the start?

I've started a new world, and I'm not sure if it's because I'm used to having more stuff unlocked or not, but it feels like there might not enough enemies, objects, and other stuff unlocked from the start.

I think it might be beneficial for new player impressions to move a some of the unlocks to the start instead. That might reduce the amount of content that gets introduced in later continents, but I'm not sure if that's too much of an immediate problem since more stuff is going to be added later anyway.

Honestly I think enough basics are unlocked from the get go.  It's enough to get a handle on the system and as you progress through it you get more things to pop.

There's a few things I'd like to see pop earlier, but that makes them sooo much better when you finally do get them.  Teleports are a good example.

Imagine trying to learn the Anachronism missions with 40+ different types of critter in there.  GYEAH.  Talk about a headache.  I still make mistakes in those.  Oh, look... water espers don't belong... whack whack... DEFEAT... here?  Crap.

Yes, if you're an RPG style completionist where you want to pop everything before New Game+ (like I can be, depending on the game) this will frustrate you.   Personally, I'm taking a zen outlook on the idea... just go with it. :)  You can rampage the bosses pretty quickly if you choose to.
... and then we'll have cake.

Hmm, I personally think it's mostly fine the way it is.

There's ALOT to unlock in a new world, but there are a few unlocks that can get done very fast, so it doesnt take long at all before the player starts getting them opened up.

And things like new enemies..... ahh, some of those are freaking nasty, so they kinda need to take a certain amount of time so that the player powers up a bit.

Not to mention that the game is a difficult one, and has a high learning curve;  throwing too much stuff at new players right away isnt the best idea.  There's so much to learn as it is.

If one is not pleased, one could choose the advanced start, which places you on the third? continent with a lot of crap instantly unlocked.

Our troubles have mostly been with folks getting overwhelmed by too much stuff, rather than the other way around.  That may cause some reviewers to gripe about lack of content if they don't play far enough, but I can't sacrifice the actual play experience for that.

THAT said, we are working to add more enemies that are unlocked from the start and which provide variety but not more difficulty.  Those enemies in particular should really help a lot with the feeling of variance, since they're the main sorts of things you're bumping into on a running basis.
