The complaint is that we shouldn't have to rebind them. The controls should focus on maximum usability from the start.

And that is why we are beta testing, where complaining is useless. Don't complain, state your observations, make suggestions and be constructive. To expect out of the box functionality in a beta is not realistic.

I want a like button.

Hate to interrupt your love affair, but that seems a bit hypocritical after mocking someone for an oversight and nearly starting a political discussion. </joke> ;P

Generally speaking, I think complaining is fine, it's just the airing of subjective grievances that may or may not need to be sorted out. However, a person demanding that he gets his way is not reasonable. Neither is passing judgement on the game (while it's clearly in developmental purgatory - and not one of those protracted betas-that-would-not-end). It's possible to be critical without being judgmental.

I asked that poster if they were serious about modifying the game files to configure basic controls because it looked like it could be an artful joke about all of the complaining. The person is obviously smart, they are modifying their game files and communicating in a very literate way. I was just trying to resolve my own cognitive dissonance. :P

If they aren't joking though then that's what I meant with the second part of the post. If people are seriously unaware that the controls can be remapped then it should be made more obvious through feedback in the interface or even some kind of message in the game itself.

I agree. It'd be great if the Principle of charity could be applied to these discussions as well--while there has been a fair amount of raw complaints raised, characterizing the debate surrounding controls as ''haven't thought to rebind them" doesn't do the argument justice.

I'm collecting notes on control issues throughout the game as I playtest, and plan to submit my findings (and possible tweaks) to Mantis by the end of the week. Most of it has to do with menu usability tweaks for "XInput" style controllers, since the controls are reasonable (x/c the jump/aim bug).

A number of players have put control bindings into the post. I'd hoped to present one w/ up/down bindings on bumpers and one without for review by Arcen. I intend to keep the original thread updated w/ results from the bugtracker as they're implemented.

Maybe it's just crossed communication, then? The new UI has a lot of kinks to be attended to (esp: menus and strategic overview). I'm thinking of submitting a post describing updates to that as well.
