Collecting resources and continent tier.
« on: March 30, 2012, 02:15:59 am »
I don't know if things tend to work out this way for anybody else, but a lot of the time I feel like I can't gather enough resources for more than a couple offensive spells from missions before said missions kick the continent tier up another level.

Secret missions help with this somewhat since they don't affect the continent tier. On the other hand, since you only see/discover them one at a time and because they're also how you get more NPCs and structures, secret missions that give you resources don't seem all that common, so getting resources this way can be a really slow process. I often don't expand my selection of regularly used spells that much until tier 4 or 5 when increasing continent tier becomes less of an issue.

I don't really see this as a "problem" by itself, as unless I'm mistaken we're not supposed to be able to get all the spells that easily in one go. However, this does make it feel like I have to really go out of my way to expand my selection of spells outside the usual two or three projectiles.

I kind of worry that this might make some players more reluctant to use resources on trying out a wider selection of spells and cause them to stick with the same two or three every single time.

Personally I just play secret missions until I have the resources for what I want, are resources common as a reward? no, but secret missions are hardly rare.

I mean I faintly resent having to play the world map missions, initially I play 2 to get my tier orbs, but after that in my cost benefit analysis they offer me nothing, so when eventually I am forced to play them to progress it is grating.

On the topic of people trying out spells, personally I change my main combat spells at the start of each new continent, and it makes each continent a lot more interesting, so i see no reason why players should be encouraged to try all the spells at once, if anything i'd suggest a pop up saying

"The world continues on forever, don't feel rushed into trying out all the spells now, you have a lot of time and opportunity to experiment"

To help make people experiment maybe the game should look at the most used spells on the previous continent and make them unavailable on the next continent so then a different strategy will need to be used.

That sounds terrible. Maybe instead start some other spells at T2.

Taking away options entirely doesn't benefit fun in any way.

What could be done is changing how the new continent is seeded (used a lot of fire based spells, now there's less desert or it doesnt spawn as close to the settlement for example).
That said, it's a solution only if it is really desired, its a lot of work without a lot of improvement IMO.

Who knows what the future might bring, if AVWW does well and they add a lot of new timeshards and spells we might have continents automatically lack availability to some shards just thanks to the variety.

I personally don't think they should change anything about this right now, i'm slowly starting to use new abilities and experiment aswell myself.
Kind of reminds me about that other topic, where they commented on how people are taught to do things in a certain way, like exploring every room in a building.
Its probably the same here with the spells, you don't need to use all of them straight away, and you shouldn't be forced to differentiate either.

Personally I like things the way they are at the moment. If I really need a particular resource, I can use a seek resources guardian scroll wherever said resource appears most.

I think the resource curve could benefit from being eased a little bit. Either increase the amounts you can find a bit, or reduce the amounts you need, or both. The amount required for some spells does get a little crazy, although that's mostly at the top end. I also tend to play a long long time at T5 trying to max out spell lines that I have, even if it's spells that I don't use much. Some sort of Pokemon-esque 'catch 'em all' attitude, or something. Although even with all that extra play, I still haven't managed to max out fireball yet. That's just a LOT of magma, which doesn't seem to spawn that regularly in my missions. And when I try to seek resources on areas where it will spawn, it still seems like I end up with something else. Magma and Welkin Gel are the main things that it seems like you need just too much of.

Also once you have unlocked Cat's Eye it becomes significantly harder to get Charred Amber.

This ^^ I am having the same issue it extremely hard gathering those after unlocking cats eye. I think a simple fix for resource scarcity could be that seek resource guarding power should spawn missions that contain your lowest materials available as priority. I wasted 3 of them trying to get some only for them to all spawn stuff I had in abundance.
