AVWW Beta 0.918 "The Music Of The Leaky Draconite" Released!
« on: March 28, 2012, 08:33:32 pm »
Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2012/03/avww-beta-0918-music-of-leaky-draconite.html

This one is the second release of today.  There was a memory leak in chunk-gen in the prior version, and we wanted to get a fix out for that as soon as we could.  Apologies that it took us a couple of hours to do so, actually -- we had the fix done about an hour and a half ago, but there were some other bits of code that were still in-progress and we couldn't push a new version until that stuff was checked in.

That said, there's some pretty cool new content in this version.  A new kind of playable character (draconites), and a great new music track by Pablo that has now been added to the playlists for underground caverns in most areas.

More to come soon.  Enjoy!

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 0.500 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 0.500 or later, you can download that here.

You guys need to spend some time underground with this one. I think this new track of Pablo's is honestly the best track in the game.

As I noted to Pablo, I think that there are 4-5 tracks that are better than this one that are already in the game, but that's hardly an insult.  This is a really top-drawer track, and builds in a really cool way, but there's just too much competition on this soundtrack for the top spot!  Which is great; this is definitely the strongest soundtrack for any Arcen title yet, by an order of magnitude even, and I've loved all our soundtracks.

I think I might have run into something really bad a few minutes after starting the game up again.  :(

I attempted a mission, and I've gotten some kind of error where I can't move, I cannot see my character, and I'm stuck in the area the mission took place in.

I cannot exit the game properly after loading this world and I have to close the game using the task manager.

Abandoning the character or trying to exit the mission area do not work. I seem to be unable to continue playing this world right now.

Um, I get a fatal error immediately upon loading my world. It doesn't even load, it just kicks me back to the main menu. I'll post it on mantis.

EDIT: Mantis'd

I hate to be the third complaint in a row, but I'm getting random stuttering of gameplay and music, usually shortly after entering an area or coming back to the world map.

Edit: Also is it normal for AVWW.exe to use 1.7 GB of RAM?

Edit2: After exiting and restarting it's using 1.1 GB, so maybe that is normal. I had never actually looked at the process while it was running before.

Edit again: Also the stuttering seems to have gone away with the reload, so maybe I don't have a problem? Hmmm...

I got Professor Paul1290's fixed and will push that in a bit.

Looking at c4sc4's one now, and it's definitely different from the first one.  Oh joy. ;)

BobTheJanitor: For the random stuttering, I'm going to guess it's throwing exceptions?  Either that or loading something at a time it shouldn't be?  You could turn on the logging of image loading (it's under the FPS toggle in the Graphics tab of settings) and see if that sheds any light.  But if it's not doing it anymore, then it's probably not worth it.

Regarding the RAM usage, that will vary heavily, but yeah: baseline usage is about a gig, and it's easily going to use up to 2gb or so.  Potentially more, although the way that we dump and reload images as needed makes it so that it doesn't just skyrocket.  To load all the art assets in the game at once would put you well over 3gb of RAM at this point, though.
