AVWW Beta 0.911 "Fifty Craters " Released!
« on: March 20, 2012, 04:42:44 pm »
Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2012/03/avww-beta-0911-fifty-craters-released.html

This one is our second release of the day, and its main feature is a new "Defend Supply Depot From Meteor Storm" mission type, which is a pretty cool new mission vaguely reminiscent of missile command (but with tons of twists making this a lot more interesting).

This also fixes a few bugs, one of which was a rather critical regression in the prior version (the inability to use fire touch to damage stuff).

More to come soon -- 1.0 is coming up next week (though we still don't have an exact day yet).  Enjoy!

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 0.500 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 0.500 or later, you can download that here.

Random question, how are buoys coming along? The missions with all the juicy rewards seem to keep spawning behind impenetrable turbulent ocean tiles. It's maddening!

Buoys have been in the game for a couple of weeks now. :)

What what? Is this some sort of continent 3 required thing, or something?

I have yet to see buoys spawn myself either.

It's a guardian power scroll. You should be seeing them on continent 1, unless you're completely ignoring guardian powers in which case it will keep seeding the same low-level buildings for you. But assuming you have the 7 basic buildings, the chances of a buoy scroll should be pretty good to my recollection.

But I may be remembering wrong how they seed. They are definitely not gated, though. To my recollection. ;)

I can check on it tomorrow if nobody is seeing them. Maybe we made them a stash room reward and I forgot or something.

But to clarify: the release we added the turbulent waters and changed the ocean suck-in mechanics and added the canoe, that was the release the buoys were in. To my recollection. I can't imagine we would have left an inability to cross oceans for even one release.

My settlement is so full of buildings and random decorations that it really looks quite gaudy. I'm definitely not neglecting any scrolls. :) I'm thinking something is keeping them from seeding. I'd just been laboring under the assumption that they were 'coming soon'.

Here's an unrelated thing I just thought of: Why was it that snow suits are considered heavy for the purposes of enchants and such? I mean I get why that is from a realism perspective (although not really since native ice agers get light suits). But from a gameplay perspective, since there aren't any challenging platform sections which are frozen (like there are for heat-suit requiring regions) then the only real effect is that whenever I go to pick a new character, I always pick someone native to an ice age. I mean, why would you pick someone that can't explore one of the major region types without losing triple jump and other movement enhancers?

I'm just going to double post since I have some mission feedback as well and when I tag 10 edits on to the end of a post, it seems like things get missed in the shuffle.

The meteor defense missions are fun, although one major request I have is that my spells stop killing my crates. When there's an enemy digging in to them, there's not really any way to avoid nailing tons of crates when you're trying to kill that enemy. And as a follow up, I think these missions would be more fun without enemies. Random spawns of enemies with a lot of HP who are going to take several seconds to bring down while you just watch them bore holes in your crates isn't much fun. I'd rather see the unique meteor portion beefed up. Faster meteors, or meteors that do more damage (maybe intermixed with the regular types) and frantic running back and forth sounds like more fun than spamming spells at yet another bullet sponge enemy. All that said, I haven't actually failed one of these yet, so they aren't too hard it seems.

The anachronism missions... maybe I don't get these. I can't win one, and the reason is bats. As soon as a bat sees you, you're basically sunk. You can't get rid of it, and if it's a native creature to that region, you're just going to have it fluttering around your head damaging you until it jumps in front of a spell meant for someone else and you fail the mission. And God help you if it's a bunch of ice bats. You can't kill them, and if you just try to tank their damage, then you can't move. Fun!

I don't have the time to play it yet but I suppose the meteor shower gets a lot more interesting when the meteors can actually reach the ground :P.

Additionally don't the ice age people get an extra character point? I think that was mentioned when the era-based stats were introduced.

Hello this is my first post, i've noticed something weird in the ocean shallows (ocean caves) : the first room of a tier is often missing a door to the next room. it happened to me twice in a row in 2 different caves, first in the first tier 1 room and then in the first tier 2 room. Both rooms had the same layout.

This is kinda annoying because oceans are hard to explore and unlocking the tier3 for coral is becoming a nightmare...

Just in: Snowsuits are no longer considered heavy, unlike heatsuits.  This makes it so that you can use double and triple jumps in the ice age areas even when not playing an ice age character.

Regarding buoys: I looked at the code, and saw nothing that seems amiss.  So I tossed it over to Keith, as guardian power seeding was originally his thing.

Regarding meteor defense: I think that the friendly fire aspect and the enemies are what make this unique.  Friendly fire I could see losing, but the enemies are vital to the longevity of any mission.  Let me put it this way: if enemies aren't involved, then that mission only works a single way, period, forever.  As we add more enemies, we get a combinatorial effect on missions that use enemies where new things start happening and there are interesting unexpected twists, thanks to the enemies.  Without the enemies, it's just a kind of minigame version of meteor shower.

Regarding anachronism missions: good point on the bats, I'll make sure that they are excluded from those sorts of missions.  Some types of enemies just don't fit well with certain kinds of missions, and excluding those sorts of enemies I'm not opposed to for any given mission type.  For instance, I think that also desert burrowers and urban crawlers should be excluded from meteor storm missions, thinking about that more.  Desert burrowers make it way too likely to friendly fire your own crates.

KDR_11k: I don't think the ice age folks get an extra point anymore, I think I removed that a while back.

Sirian: Welcome to the forums!  If you have a savegame that we can use to test that, we'd love to have it on mantis.  However, I think we already have one report of this with a save, so in this specific case I think we have what we need.  And in general, big changes are coming to the ocean shallows to make them more distinct from oceans and way less annoying in general -- because I quite agree they are really annoying right now.  Thanks!

I figured the enemies would want to stay in, but friendly fire along with the enemies is pretty brutal. When a bat or a skelebot or a rhino or basically anything with melee goes after a crate stack, they just burrow a cave down into the middle of it. There's pretty much no option to get them out of there but firing tons of shots right into the crates you're supposed to be protecting. And the balance seems a little odd. Meteors, which you're supposed to be defending against, do like 1/4 or 1/3 a bar of health to the crates, and can mostly be safely ignored, whereas enemies and especially your own spells will one shot the crates.

Edit: Also, hooray for the snowsuit changes. Now I can finally play as a dignified chap in a waistcoat.

Okay:

* Supply Crates in meteor storm missions are now immune to friendly fire.

Will look at the balance on the supply crates, too.
