Just wanted to say real quick, that i LOVE the return of CP, you know the chance to take your time exploring and everything as you get yourself ready to go at the overlord.  :)

I really like playing like that, it feels comfortable to me.  :)

I know I was complaining before that NPCs weren't dropping enough healing orbs, but now I have to say that I think they're dropping a bit too much. Killing a tier II skelebot sniper just now gave me 22.7% HP back.

Yeah, something is seriously messed up here --- I just tanked a battlefield mission; by the time I was a third done I had so many health drops floating around me that I could stand in the line of fire for the rest of the fight and came out with 100% health.  Going to mantis this; it is clearly wrong.

By the way, why is there no such thing as mana drops?  I can see these being limited; but it seems odd in battlefield missions that once I've skillfully headshotted a few skelebots there's nothing to do but retreat behind my lines and wait for my mana to creep back up.  Surely good shooting should be rewarded with more shooting?

EDIT: Oh gosh, how did I forget?  The new UI looks fantastic!  Excited about enchants and many of the other changes too; it looks like the game is really in the home stretch.

Looking forward to trying this one tonight stranded in work at the moment. All the changes look very interesting and should make for a more balance and exploration centred game which is what I enjoyed most about the earlier beta's.

Hopefully I might be able to get access to a residential building so I can have a play with guardian powers too. I have three worlds on the go and it's interesting how each beta effects existing games.

Well done guys can't wait to play.

A few notes:

1. The updater actually does the non-responding thing for me also sometimes, but just very briefly.  I think that it's nothing to do with the updater being different from AI War, but with it doing that when there are larger files to unpack all at once.  And there's been a lot of large file updates for AVWW so far.  Sorry about the inconvenience there (and it should be no more than like 30-60 seconds at most), but I don't think there's anything I can do about that in the short term. :/

2. For the other bug reports here, we're actually going to be addressing all of those with a patch to come out later this morning.  See the release notes for details on these and some other refinements that is coming into the next one.  Then we're getting back to working on the new warp mechanics and secret missions this afternoon!

I feel like there's something you guys have done with shaders or the graphics in general that makes everything look nicer. Did characters always have outlines? Have the quality of the tilesets and spell graphics been updated? I can't tell what it is. Maybe just the HUD makes everything look nicer, but the graphics feel more "video game"-y now.

Very glad to hear it!  What you're seeing is the whole coming together, mainly.  We've upgraded a number of smaller parts, and the color value of these newer components matches that of the older components and so on.  If you look at some of the before and after pictures, you can see what I mean.  The house in the grasslands looks different between both pictures, right?  But it is 100% identical in both -- what's change is what's around the house, rather than the house itself.  And that in turn changes your perception of the house, even down to the color the house looks to be.

Experienced artists and interior decorators both take great advantage of this effect, but it's been something I've been struggling with during this project, and only have been really figuring out lately.  Partly through player feedback, partly through having time to experiment on my own.

The main things that have changed since the first beta version are:
1. Yes, the characters now have outlines -- that's the literally only thing different about them, though.
2. Some of the spell effects were upgraded, but not since October or so at the latest.  However, a few of them do have better backgrounds laid down for them now (blackness for their additive effects to lie on top of, making them more vibrant rather than more washed out).  Many others haven't changed at all, though.
3. The HUD and the GUI and the fonts have been majorly updated throughout, and use very different color values from before.  This causes the perception of everything else to be different, even beyond just the complimentary colors stuff.
4. The skies have been hugely redone, of course, and there are also now the background parallax effects which also majorly change things.  These two changes really affect the rest of the scene an enormous amount, perhaps moreso than any other set of changes to the art mentioned thus far.
5. There has also been new art added, mainly for interiors in the form of new furniture and such.  But almost none of the pre-existing art has been touched at all (re-rendering the barrels, and getting rid of the vent pipes in favor of icicles being the two exceptions that I can recall).
6. There have also been a few isolated pieces of other things that have been improved in some fashion, such as the water effect or similar.  But these are mostly isolated and wouldn't affect your overall perception of most scenes.  And a few glitches with some of the spell effects were fixed so that there weren't straight lines cutting through diffuse glows, etc.

And... that's literally it.  The whole really is more than the sum of its parts, to use the cliche; but only when the parts are all... what, synergistic?  It's been a real eye-opener for me personally how much things like this change the overall perception of the art, and I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one seeing that it looks so much better. :)

Yeah, that's probably it. Going into a Desert interior in this version gets a "WOW! This looks great!" from me, as opposed to the old "everything looks like fancy clipart" from the earliest versions.

I haven't been keeping up with this much, but have the complaints coming from RPS mostly legitimate issues, or just wining that it isn't "polished" like AA or AAA studio titles yet, or just wining that it is different than what they are used to?

Again, mostly, of course there would probably be some from every category.

There's some insightful guys, a handful of genuine trolls, and a wide spectrum inbetween.  The combination of their not knowing a lot about the game, their not knowing a lot about us, and the general amplifying effect that internet communication has upon the nastier aspects of human nature... well, the result isn't that pretty.

After staring at those two pictures with the grasslands house again, my mind really sees them as different. The second one is just lit better, and has better shading, even though I know they are identical.

You know that optical illusion with the two different squares of a checkerboard floor, and one of them is in shadow, but they are really the same shade of grey? It's like that.

Oh yeah, it has exactly the same effect on me, too.  It's a pretty cool effect, and something the game just didn't have before recently.
