This might be something that will change in future versions, but I figured I'd toss it here anyway:

Right now, the sprites in the caves are much trickier than normal bosses, since the mini-sprites take your shots. This means that not only do you have to make sure the mini-sprites don't hit you, you also have to make sure that you don't hit them, since you can no longer just "spray-and-pray". I'm unsure of a good solution, since I really like the general concept of them spawning mini-sprites instead of just boring old shots.

Now that I think about it, I've not fought a dragon yet. I'd guess those have the exact same problem as sprites though, in that their flames absorb the shots.
That is an important factor in balance.  Have you tried Tidal Pulse or another piercing spell to clear out the incoming fire (and possibly hit the boss at the same time)?  Does that still work?  Energy Pulse may be better for actually hitting the boss.

Another thing that helps with the overall going-oom situation is to use fireball as your main nuke; 100 mp per shot allows for quite a few shots.  Doesn't help with mining/nest-killing, of course.

I had honestly forgotten about Tidal Pulse (I wrote it off rather early as "extremely inefficient", and never looked back at it). That one might do the trick, but I haven't tested it yet, what with being out of health from a few failed forays...

Fireball and Energy Pulse isn't of that much use though; if you're out in the open, the sprites tend to swarm you and quickly drain your health to nothing, so you want something that runs around edges, which I believe neither do.
