AVWW Beta 0.523, "Miniatures and Health/MP Drops," Released!
« on: October 12, 2011, 10:38:29 pm »
Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2011/10/avww-beta-0523-miniatures-and-healthmp.html

This one is really all over the place in terms of what it adds -- a lot of things people have wanted for a while, plus yet more internal progress on the multiplayer front.

The first really huge change is to how the balance is handled for your equipment as your civ level increases.  The short explanation is that there's now a grace period so your equipment doesn't start to get worse until you actually are able to start crafting new equipment of the next tier.

Kind of going along with that, there's also now a bit of randomization of when you will find gems of the next tier.  The 100% changeover point from one tier to the next is still the same, but there is now a change of finding higher-tier stuff a little early now.

The namesake new feature of this release is actually the new Miniature spell, which is another Movement type spell (like storm dash, teleport, and ride the lightning).  Miniature lets you shrink your character down to 25% of their normal size for about ten seconds, but you take twice as much damage while small.

This is great for a lot of purposes in exploring through small holes that previously only were traversible if you transmogrified yourself into a bat.  However, it's also good in general for making it so that neutral skelebot characters can fit through underground areas that otherwise might have posed permanent blockages to them.

The Miniature spell can be activated by a double-tap of the down key, so that makes it convenient enough to actually use for purposes of dodging enemy attacks, too.  This should fulfill some of the goals of the "crouch ability" discussion that's been going on for the last week or so.

There are another dozen or so smaller tweaks and features that I won't enumerate here -- see the release notes for details -- but the last new feature I want to highlight is healing and MP drops from non-boss enemies.  Previously non-boss enemies only dropped shards or nothing.  Now they also have a 10% chance each of dropping either a minor healing or minor MP-restoration item that flies to you automatically like the shards do.

This is another one of those things people have been asking for since the start of beta, so it's great to finally have that one in place.  More to come tomorrow.  Enjoy!

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 0.500 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 0.500 or later, you can download that here.

Admittedly, I haven't tried it yet, but I just bet I am going to get myself so stuck in a destroyed room by playing around with that miniature spell and trying to fit through the cracks in the walls.

Wonder what happens if you're in a tight space when the spell wears off?

On the topic of health and mp drops

Please consider reducing their effectivity to 10% of what they are now, and INCREASE the amount that can spawn by factor 10 - randomize that properly and done.

The reason is that more smaller pickups are better than 1 large one imo...

Thanks, all! Glad you're enjoying it. :)

Just in:

* When health/MP attractive drops are dropped from enemies, now there are 10x more of them, but individually they are 10x weaker.
** This visually looks better, and also is more functional when there are players that are almost full health.

Also, regarding what happens when you are miniaturized and you are in a small space and try to grow larger -- you currently just get stuck until you go mini again.  But it's on my list for today to resolve that and the getting-stuck-when-becoming-human-after-being-a-bat thing.

How about simply making the miniature spell revert when you use it again or go into another room rather than having it on a timer?

Also now that we have the morph ball, can we have bombs? I'm thinking a cheaper death touch variant with a timed fuse :P.

I thought about it, but was kind of on the fence.  What do others think?  That would make it so that this is a tier-0-only spell, since there's nothing that would be able to improve with higher-tier versions of it, but that might be just what needs to happen.

Ooh, that's a good idea for mantis. :)

You could remove the timer on the miniaturisation spell and still have it tiered: early tiers could cause you to take more damage; or make you slower; or cost a lot of mana; or drain mana over time; etc. Later tiers could then be more favourable.

Yeah, that would require being able to actually show the amount of damage this tier makes you take in the description of the spell, of course -- which is something I want to do anyway, but it's one reason I just went with a timer for now.

I think that's the first thing I thought should happen with it as soon as I read about it in the change log.

Not sure if 'elusion scroll' was added this patch or not, but I just noticed I had one in my inventory. And promptly accidentally right clicked it while reading it while sitting in my home settlement. Now I'm wondering how 'extremely rare' it is, and if I'll ever see one again. I have a bad habit of accidentally right clicking while I'm resting my hand on the mouse when I'm tired. Guess I must be tired!
