The RNG gives, and laughs while doing so.

I save-scummed up a nice hometown for my new world.  (Shame on me!)  And I was content with 5 granite deposits within reach.
Then I hit level 3 and I learned how much AVWW must love teasing.

There are another 3 granite deposits just a hair outside of my town's radius.  A commodity tower is siting right on a spot with 8 granite deposits in reach.
Come on guys, can't we move the town just a little over that way?  I'll clear it out first.

Why must you tease me so, AVWW?

Anyone else have good fortune that really isn't?  Although this case was great fortune and better fortune (that really wasn't).

For giggles

There could be build-able mining outposts that must be manned by 2 guys which in turn extend the radius where resources count towards a cities production - bonus points: The ability to extend the coverage beyond the "normal" radious by giving a build order "build supply line to resource deposit" which links even far-away deposits to a city (via the resource mining outpost)

Whatever is done there needs to be some point to resource deposits that are not in the default range of a settlement.
