Autoheal mechanics

So, one of the first things I did in AVWW was to try to see what the result of dying would actually be, by trying to let a character die intentionally, only to find that a health potion was automatically used right at the point of what would have been my first death.

Then to further explore the possibility, I let the health potions run out and then was further sustained by Heal Scrolls.

So after seeing how resilient my character was to silly accidental death, I decided maybe he actually had a future after all (I'm still playing him, yay).

My question is what exactly are the limitations of this auto healing?  Is there no chance of death if any consumable heals remain?  And also, am I losing out on any efficiency by waiting for it to happen?  Is there a reason I should consider using these items manually?

Well, you'll have to worry about cooldowns and such, because if your healing cooldowns are still active when you get smashed in the face, you're probably going to die anyway.

It's also great to use healing items to top your hp off before and after major battles.

Also, I tend to try to use my heal scrolls first because heal scrolls are easier to come by. (At least in my experience)

Yeah, if you die twice within 20 seconds you're toast no matter what healing items you have.

Adding to what Orelius said, there is one reason why you should use potions manually, and it is because the auto-healing has an increased cooldown to use any other health potions. And believe me, death saver or not, this sometimes can be dangerous, especially against bosses (I don't want to remind my last crippled dragon fight -_-)

Edit: Chris answered faster than me, but I think my explanation also helps for this case ;D

More testing to do on this. I accidentally turned into a bat and started dying, eventually died. I had no idea what was killing me, I thought I had my cold suit but apparently that doesn't work if you are a bat. I didn't notice any auto healing while I was morphed.

Thanks.  All good to know.  I've been sticking to fairly easy ice areas so the cool down aspect of healing hadn't really been an obvious drawback to me yet.

I'm pretty sure I have been autohealed as a bat (dying to environment damage), but the second death can easily come while still waiting for the cooldown.

Also, not sure if this is a problem or not, but you continue to take environmental damage while in strategic mode or crafting.  So my first non-ice age character I tried died after frantically building a snowsuit.

My first non-ice age char also went amok getting that snowsuit... luckly I've did it and runned to the hearth stone quick enough to get time to open the inventory and use it.

Which leads to the question: why do we have a hotkey to a equipment inventory when that doesn't work, nor does it puts the "equipments" there?

Because that hotkey is from an old version of the game, and needs to be removed.  Equipment won't be on a separate bar, everything goes on your ability bar.  Later, there will be enchants that get applied directly to your player instance (surviving beyond specific characters), but the equipment thing is gone.
