Auto-Updater borked
« on: August 18, 2012, 12:31:55 pm »
Well, that was a thing. I'm trying to install the latest update, but apparently AVWW auto-update just hangs when it's supposed to be used. Is there any way I can just reinstall just the auto-updater (since it seems to be its own separate thing) to see if that fixes the issue? It's worked fine in the past, so I find it kinda odd, especially since I have no explanation for it. My version of the game is 1.205, if that info helps.

Windows or OSX?  I can upload the updater file for you.

Oh dear, that didn't work at all, which makes me think it has nothing to do with the auto-updater at all. I don't want to reinstall AVWW entirely, since I don't think that would help. However, it's not a permissions issue since the other updates went through fine. It is a mystery.  :-\

You check the usual suspects? Antivirus, other security related programs, firewalls, etc? Boot into safe mode (with networking) and try it there?

Nope, safe mode with networking still has it hang. My next question is: what happens if I try to run the auto-updater manually if there is no update? Would it hang in a similar fashion? I'm thinking there's a possibility that it doesn't see the update for some reason. I scrounged around in the files and noticed the zip file with the update was there, which kind of supports that idea.

If the files have been downloaded, then running the updater manually should normally work a-ok.

My updater always hangs just when it should be finishing, but killing the task and then starting the game always results in it working anyway. Not sure if that's related or a different issue. It started with AVWW and now sometimes happens in AIW as well. And the problem has followed me from win XP when I upgraded to win 7. Very odd, but it hasn't caused any issues so I don't really worry about it.

I had the AIW updater hang on me once, but it finished normally a few minutes later.  And that's once out of a bunch of times.

If my input helps, I've got Windows 7, I've just always downloaded and installed the updates through the in-game 'download and install' button... and they just work. I've always had Windows 7 as I play these games, and it's never had any issues hanging. So.. at a guess maybe it's some kind of hardware issue, if not a software conflict.
