I Really, Really Like the Story.... :)
« on: December 29, 2012, 04:01:42 am »
Everytime i go into a tile now, and other times besides, there is a dialog of my character saying something, making an observation, reflecting on the state of things, reminiscing, or voicing the fears she feels... And i am loving every minute of it, the ongoing story... the ongoing interaction of the character with the world, with the situation, with me as i beat the badguys and get beat by the badguys!  :)  I just wanted to let you know, i am loving it and having a great time!   :)

Even I've been liking the story stuff, and that's really high praise coming from me, as often with many games I cant be bothered to even pay attention to it.

This though is well-written and the game isnt trying to shove it down my throat like so many others these days.

I like the flavor of the one-line bits, quite a bit. It's quick to skip past, and helps the world come that much more to life. Buuut... Unless the story picks up in a big way in the lategame, I wouldn't say it's really anywhere near "great". The world has its personality and flavor, that's about all it is to me. Not to say that's not a good thing, by any means. I still can't find the skip dialog button for when I start new experimental games, though. Clicking the right stick is my 'advance dialog/confirm' button. No offense to the devs, but... nothing's worth clicking that thing in 30 times in a row for the beginning part that I already have memorized.
Bastion. Psychonauts. That's my standard for 'truly great'. Living up to that is something nobody really does. ;)

There is a check box in the settings you can enable that lets you skip past dialog with the escape key. It's disabled by default to prevent new players from skipping past the dialog accidentally.

Oh okay. I thought it would have been a specific key.
Clever on the part of Arcen, alongside all of those features that involve "Hold start for 10 seconds" or "triple tap start" and all that. Thanks for that reminder. I know somebody told me before, and I just rudely forgot it.

I'm wondering why do that? Why not make it so that the game allows you to use the keybind every time after the first game?

Not sure if that's sarcasm or real. There's features that only work when you hold down a button for a while?

Not in this game, but some other gamers have that as the way to skip cutscenes.

It's not sarcasm. There's this specific categories of tiny things, tiny touches to make sure you don't accidentally skip cutscenes. It used to be, you press start, it skips automatically, or you can't skip at all. Having to turn on the ability to skip scenes, while not particularly intuitive since I couldn't find it, is just as good as all those other ways. Like FF12, which lets you pause cutscenes, and then has you press a two button combination to skip them... or the traditional way of pressing start twice instead, or holding a button to skip scenes. There's even a game where if you go into the options menu, you can turn off the story so that no cutscenes play at all!

Basically I pay way too much attention to tiny and almost meaningless features of games and derail forums based solely on that. I just like comparing the implementation of little things between developers.

I'd like to see more personality and humor from the lieutenants, as with Beebop & Rocksteady, Bulk & Skull etc. The survivors are randomized every time but when it comes to regular characters, you can both give them good lines and keep them diverse for variety between playthroughs.
