Gamepad working incorrectly?
« on: April 18, 2012, 02:11:55 am »
Hey all,

Just curious if anyone is using a gamepad that has dual analog sticks to play?  I'm using a Xbox 360 controller (although I imagine it would be the same for a PS3 or PC gamepad), and I'm unable to map the second analog stick correctly.

It's interesting to say the least...the left stick works well for movement, and the second analog stick is defaulted to aim up and down (although it doesn't return to center when the stick does).  It almost feels like the analog stick is being considered a slider or a throttle of some sort.  I push down to aim down, and it will sometimes return to center...if I push up it will aim up and then sometimes return to center...it very erratic and not usable (in my opinion).

I would hope that we could map the analog stick on the right to act more like a mouse, to move the cursor around the screen, and use the left stick for movement.  Maybe that isn't the thought here?  As pushing the stick up (the default) put the cursor just above the head of the character and pushing down puts it somewhere below the character and as I state above sometimes returns to center, sometimes sticks to the bottom/top and sometimes goes lower or higher depending...

There is also an issue where the mapping modification isn't working...I'm able to change one item (for example Aim Up), and then if I try to map Aim Down, the message to press the direction and right click/left click flashes and I'm unable to modify anything.

I've already opened an issue with Mantis, but wanted to see if anyone else was doing this and was able to confirm my results.

If I'm trying something outside the realm of what we can expect with gamepads, that's fine as well.  I haven't used one before but figured I'd give the newly added gamepad updates a try.

I apologize if this has been brought up already or if I'm doing something that isn't going to be supported, but thought it was worth mentioning.  Also, although my gamepad seems to be working in other games, I wouldn't mind someone giving it a try and confirming my findings, maybe it's just me  :(

Hey there,

I'm going to be testing out my new 360 controller on this today for the first time, but on my Logitech Rumblepad 2 I definitely don't see this.  From the sound of things, your gamepad might have its analog stick centering off.  Usually the simplest way to fix this is to unplug it, make sure nothing is touching the gamepad analog sticks, and then plug it back in.  If that doesn't work, then you want to go into the control panel in windows and the go under joysticks/gamepads (depends on your OS version) and go through the calibration steps.

It used to be back in the 80s and 90s that we had to go through that stupid calibration routine every time we started a game, heh.  Controllers for the PC sure have come a long way.  But even on consoles, they're still susceptible to being left upside down when plugged in -- when the gamepad powers on, its then-current positions of its analog sticks are considered true center.  If it's sitting upside down with the stick pushed against your desk, that makes it so you can only move one direction and everything is off, etc.  At the OS level, not even at the game level.  As noted, just unplugging and replugging that back in fixes it.

Ah, good memories; how many times I've run into that from the N64 on up through the Wii and PS3, heh. ;)

And if that's not it, please do let me know!

Hi Chris,

Thank you so much for your reply, you are always very responsive and it's appreciated.

I just gave it another try (reconfiguring my controller using the calibration utility)...wow that brings back memories (and not always good ones), and I still have the same problem.  My gamepad works fine on other games, although I do intend to test it on some others just to make certain.

I haven't concluded that it's not my gamepad, so if you are able to try out your 360 controller and if it works for you, then I'll chalk it up to something on my end.

For me personally it's not a huge deal, as I play the game with keyboard/mouse anyway, but since I know the GA is coming up soon, thought I'd bring it up in case it is indeed a problem that needs to be fixed.

Who knows maybe it's something specific to 360 controllers or potentially just mine.

I'll do some additional testing both in the game and out and see if I can't narrow it down further.  As always thank you for the great game and all the time and effort you all put into making it the best possible.

I appreciate it in return, and thanks for your help!  I'll check out my 360 controller this afternoon and let you know what I find.

You bet!

(Note: we were talking all day in Mantis, for anyone wondering what he's talking about)
