Annoying Enemies
« on: May 11, 2012, 10:54:02 am »
There are certain enemies in the game that I find incredibly annoying, to the point that I try to immediately leave any area where I find them. I wanted to see what other people think:

- The devs seem to have an obsession with homing projectiles, or projectiles that have a mind of their own. That's ok with the fairies (but fairly annoying) because they have low HP, but it gets old fast. IMO homing projectiles are not fun. They take away your ability to maneuver around them and they're just cheap. It seems like everyday there's another enemy with some form of homing projectiles.

- Enemies that constantly run back and forth like the rhino and eagle, without making a sound until they hit you, are not very enjoyable either. I'd much rather see more interesting AI on these guy, as in they would sit and wait, or just walk around (in the rhino's case) until you got close, and then they'd go psycho. Get away from them and they'd relax again.

- I hate the fact that the eagle can go through walls. This behavior makes sense for something like ghosts (which are usually slow to compensate), but not for a freakin' eagle. I feel like the game taps into some monster behaviors from 20 years ago that have gone extinct for good reason, and this is one of them.

- Fire bats: seem to be near impossible to avoid getting hit by these suckers, and they hit for a LOT including DoT.

Any others?

The only one I have ever had a problem with is the Blue Whale Bosses. They are an absolute nightmare to deal with since you are trying to move around in an underwater environment whilst simultaneous being swarmed by hundreds of mini whales.

If you are having a problem with Firebats look into a spell with knockback which makes them very easy to deal with and spells with piercing do a pretty good job against the fairies or anything with a homing attack.

I understand there are some tricks to dealing with some enemies, but IMO if you're going to be giving an enemy homing projectiles, you need to compensate somehow, like by making those enemies weaker. That's why fairies are a fair trade-off. Crashed alien speeders are annoying as heck. You're too busy taking care of the spawned homing projectiles to ever damage the enemy itself. So I just stand next to the speeder, let it hit me, and keep whipping it with miasma whip until it dies. Same thing for the dread gazebos. Background objects should really not be that much of a threat.

In fact the whole abandoned town has gone nuts since the last few updates. It's like the future of the terminator movies.

Bosses are somewhat different since every fight is supposed to be 'epic', so it's somewhat ok to spawn little things that chase you. Still, you have to be careful with spawning too many of them.

I hear what you say about whale bosses. Haven't even tried them yet.

The eagles are one of the enemies I just really don't get, the majority of the time they're already gone before I can kill them and because they're flying away from me there doesn't seem to be much point chasing them down and attempting to engage them in combat.

Yeah Eagles shouldn't be able to go through walls or the ground, it's really weird.

I haven't had any issues with sea enemies, I like the level of difficulty they present.

If there was a spell that could slow creatures down there would be a way to counter eagles, but I don't think there is. Maybe I should try catching an eagle in a bear trap.

I'm very pro-eagle; desiduous forests are one of my favorite area types because of the combination of eagles and platforms.  It's a much more Mario challenge than other parts of the game.  They do seem to be pretty unpopular, but as long as they stay confined to forests you can just avoid forests if you don't like them.

Well, they start migrating but that usually gives them fairly low populations.

I think the homing projectiles would be more fair if they couldn't just turn on a dime.

Good point. If you could lure them towards and then quickly change direction and lose them, they'd be a lot less annoying.

Creeping Death used to work very nicely against the whales, since it would usually get in 3-5 hits depending on trajectory and enemy movement (slow, BIG target).  Now that they've changed how mana works, though, that's probably not an option for 97% of players or their characters.

I detest the diving eagles: as mentioned, they have some sort of bizarro immunity to physical matter such as walls and oceans, and they're like an uber version of homing projectiles.  They make dragon fire look like light snakes in comparison.

Another bleh: utahraptors.  They jump when you do (often right into you), and they jump high, so forget platform-sniping.  They hit hard.  They take a lot of abuse.  They love to crowd you in lava tower halls where you can't escape, and it's ultimately a battle of attrition to see which of you dies first.  Oh, and they're lava immune.  I hate the little so-and-sos.

1) Goddamn Bats.
2) Sea Worms.  I hate having to shoot these for a solid 15 seconds to kill one.
3) Anything with homing projectiles you have to "Kill".  There aren't enough good non-linear AoE spells to deal with that right now.  The stupid Octopi are probably the kings of this right now, shooting barrages of 4 player-seeking, long-range, explosive, shrapnel-slinging projectiles...all while hovering out of your range and being dark-colored enough that they don't stand out from the background.
4) Utaraptors.  Pretty ridiculous indoors, where you literally can't avoid them in hallways.  You can't jump over them and you generally can't hit them before they close in on you.
5) Lightning Espers.  Purely because when the game was first released, these things were EVERYWHERE.  ALL THE TIME.  BZZZZT.

Hmm, I can think of a few points here:

1.  I dont have any trouble generally with the "homing" projectiles, or projectiles that are also enemies.... sorta same thing in this game.... but I'd rather they be a bit more creative than the fire shots are.   Something like the attacks from the Nightmare Octopus;  THOSE are interesting.   The thing first of all doesnt sit there and spam 30 of them in 2 seconds, and when it DOES fire a couple, you have to be careful about where you pop them because they'll throw all of those "actual" projectiles everywhere.    That's more interesting than just "thing that chases you".

2.  Bats..... I dunno why players have such trouble with them?    The cure for bats:  the whip spells.   Seriously.  Bats have almost no health.....  just smack the blasted things.

3.  Worms.  Ok, THESE are annoying.  Too much health for something that JUST chases you (and is as common as these guys are).

4.  GAAAAARGH RAPTORS,  these guys, not the bats, are the "goddamn bats!" of the game for me.  Omigod they're just so...... arrrrrrrgh.  Particularly when they just suddenly FALL on me in a building.   One moment, it's like, hum-de-dum, just walking along, pickin up stuff, ooh there's an item here, and then HOLYCRAP DINOSAUR ON YOUR HEAD.    Though I'll say these guys got a good bit less irritating with the new bear traps;  REALLY liking those.

5. Eagles.  They're not as annoying as the raptors for one reason...... they're HARDLY THERE.   Each eagle, you'll see it for like all of 1 second, and then it's just gone, off to another part of the map.   They just seem like they could do with a revamp, really.

I seem to be in the minority here, but I really truly hate fighting Clockwork Probes.

They have huge health pools and can really whittle your health down in numbers.
They're also pretty common. Ultimately I don't want them gone, they present a challenge
for me, but I do loathe them. Basically because it takes a long time for me to kill one
even with leafy whip and other high DPS Earth spells.

Eagles.

I realised if I ever wanted to see the unlocks from them I was going to have to activly hunt them down since they spend 90% of the time in walls and fly away from you quickly.

I'm fine with worms, bats, homing projectiles, and raptors. I hate, hate, hate, HATE lion statues.

Landspeeder robots are really annoying because their homing projectiles slaughter me and the robots have a lot of health themselves. In order to do any damage to the main thin you have to ignore all the incoming missiles and take a lot of damage.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.
