All class cheat for testing?
« on: February 08, 2013, 09:55:30 pm »
Testing mage class balance would be easier if there was a cheat to give you all the classes per tier rather than just a random 5. Is that doable? Or maybe just like, switch your choices between the first 5 and the last 5 or something, so you don't have to change the UI to allow selecting 10 classes.

Actually,
this is just an opinion, but why couldn't we just choose our class? I mean, if we know that some classes are necessary to advance to certain tiles, or to take other tiles, then why not make it choosable, instead of having the rng do it? What that means is that each game isn't so much how i play it, as it is how well i play what i have been given.
In some cases this will probably mean not being able to win, not due to circumstances of skill or luck, but because the rng never gave me what i needed to get past the tiles i had.
:(

anyway, i personally think it should be chooseable.

In this case, what it actually means is likely that certain classes are underpowered (or even overpowered).    Or perhaps just hard to use.

I havent honestly run into any situation where I absolutely could not get past BECAUSE of the classes the RNG had given me.  The ONLY exception to this was the brief period before this most recent patch where the punch spells were the only things that worked on Shallows enemies;  now that whips and the Tridents work on them, that issue should be mostly gone.

If there's another problem your having, or a situation where you're getting stuck, it might be more helpful to describe the specifics of it.   As I understand it the idea is that while the RNG decides the available choices, you should always be able to continue progressing through the game regardless of what, exactly, those 5 choices can be.   The randomness merely ensures a different experience each time;  I think it's a good mechanic, actually.   Getting stuck shouldnt be happening.   Unless it's related to a lack of a certain feat, I can see that one occurring.

Actually i think you are right, I have been stopped by well... walls being too high in some tiles and not having like water dash for others. So i think you are right, its not the classes, sorry.
Thank you for the help though, appreciate it.

I second this suggestion for testing purposes. I have been doing Tier Spell balance reports, but I'm pretty much restricted to doing 5 of the 10 classes. The only way to get the other spells for a Tier is to play the game through again and hope I get the remaining 5 spells... Actually, I might be able to keep a save file and revisit Demonaica's castle until I get the remaining spells, but that's still a bit awkward, and that's if the spells are randomized at collection time rather than world generation time.

Hmmm, we do have such a thing on the dev side. I'm not sure how much work it would be to make it player accessible.

Would be handy for testing purposes. One possible alternative is for you to provide us with ready made Worlds with the correct spells available.

Coming next version:

* When cheats are enabled, players now have access to press L and get a number of the debugging tools that we use internally.  Specifically, this menu allows you to:
** Change to any class at any time, from a dropdown.
** Unlock the new mage class tier at any time.
** Unlock the next perk or feat at any time.
** Increase the world level at any time.
** Purify the region you are standing on on the world map.
** Advance the turn without purifying a region.
** Get a random piece of equipment.
** Smash the oblivion crystal immediately.
** Smash a stratospheric citadel immediately.
** Jump to the last chunk in the current dungeon.
** Murder all bosses in the current chunk.
** None of these are remotely new to the game, but they are new that we're exposing them to players through even the cheats.

Good idea. :)

Chris, FYI, the text on that menu is not localized.

And I think some of it is not MP-safe.  Might be some other problems, but I think that's it.

Yeah, I know it's not localized, I'm not fussed about that for the cheats menu.

For the MP-safeness, it's somewhat the same sort of thing.  I think all of it actually is, or is close to being, but if people run into MP issues from cheating then that's something we can solve when it happens.  The worst that happens is they have to stop their server and reload, and everything is then fine.  So was a low priority to me for now compared to the functionality it enables for testing. :)
