About those storm generators in Valley 2... (lorewise)
« on: January 05, 2013, 09:29:43 am »
SO, in AVWW 1, we all know most of the continent is full of ravaging storms right at the beginning of the game because of that cataclysm of realities. To clear them up, we just have to build windmills, which make some sense.

But, the thing is different on AVWW 2: there are some kind of storm generators we need to destroy in order to "purify" tiles.

My question is: WHO put those generators all over the place?

The common idea that comes to my mind is "The Overlord did!", but the Overlord can´t walk past those corrupted tiles, right?

hum!!!!

I think it's more of that the overlord doesn't even have to go over those tiles. He knows that you're in only the purified land, because that's the only place that you can live, and he's out to kill you and stop your revolution.

Yeah, sounds about right. I'm sure the Overlord could go to these regions, but it's not necessary as those regions are already corrupted. The Overlord's priority is just to hunt you down (with the aid of his henchmen) at all costs.

You explanation is reasonable, but in the strategic overview it says that the Overlord "can´t" pass through corrupted tiles!. I guess if only 2 corrupted tiles are between a survivor and Demonaica, the later won´t go through there : p

Need official explanation! >: (

I think the strategic overview is talking in terms of game mechanics, but you have a point.

...although your survivors, in game mechanics, can also pass through the corruption. As far as I can tell, when the game calculates movement, it just draws a straight line and doesn't consider whether corruption exists or not.

I've had a situation where the overlord couldn't reach my survivors because making it there would require passing through a "wall" of corruption. One way to think of it is he won't look ahead through the fog even if he can pass through it, he won't because he's looking for things to smash in uncorrupted regions and figures there's no reason to go through corruption.

I actually have had Demonica not only go into unpurified tiles, but into fog of war (completely black) tiles. I figured out he was heading for a portal when he popped out on the other side.

This was recently patched in to let him go into fog actually. I'm not sure if letting him use portals behind fog is intended behavior or not.

Can see the patchnotes about that here: http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Valley_2_-_Beta_Release_Notes#Strategic_Refinements.2C_Round_1

Yea, Chris wouldn't countenance the idea of letting you use the overlord's corruption against him, so the overlord can go anywhere now ;)  And yes, he can use the warp points back there too.

Why not?

You are already using his own Oblivion Crystal against him.

Well, he can't really do anything about that without blowing up the oblivion crystal, can he?

Good point that.

I just always liked the idea that the baddie is basically foiled throughout the entire game by his own things.

He just leaves his caches of spells lying about his palace and then gets angry when they go missing.
You keep a little campsite inside his lair where you spend your down time.

He throws up a bunch of super storms to keep the people down and then huddles under a wool blanket and complains about the foul weather.

I always just assumed the windstorm thing was like him building a minefield around his house to keep out intruders and then forgetting where he put all the mines.

Speaking of those spells, if they're so powerful, why don't the henchmen get access to them?
I mean, aside from "The game would be impossible"
