About that there intro/tutorial bit.
« on: August 16, 2012, 01:42:29 pm »
Something I've come to realize is that it's all always about the same. As in, this is the only 'level' of the game that actually isn't completely procedurally generated. I'm curious about how that actually works, and whether it would be easily possible to allow players to have access to the same tools that created that area. Crowdsourced room design is amazing, but I'd think some people would have fun fiddling with room/building/outdoor design and decoration, or with creating actual full-blown levels or challenges.

The main bit I want to know about is just how exactly it works, though. Was it all just premade or is it still sort of procedurally generated?

The terrain is handmade, but a lot of the logic that makes it what it is is hardcoded, not done via any kind of toolset that could be made available to the community.

It's mostly premade, with small procedural bits.  Having big hand-crafted progression for the start of the game helps give people a consistent experience.

At the moment there's a lot of stuff that can't be done through the level editor for this particular type of level design, and there are many other challenges relating to integrating full levels of players into the procedural world of the game.  But it's certainly something that could be a possibility sometime in the future.

Ahh, I see. That would make it a pretty huge deal if you had to ever make any adjustments too, I imagine.
Well I'll be looking forward to even the faint possibility of that happening. It sounds quite cool to be able to explore premade buildings with signs and tombstones and stuff like possibly custom bosses. If the game really exploded in popularity that'd be fantastic.

But, that's a question for the future. Thanks for the super prompt response! I was actually not expecting it that quick which is why I'm like 2 hours late in replying.
