is it just me or are most of the complaints about the animation quality?

Yea, I've already adjusted those in the code for the next video. The walking animation was too slow, just a timing thing, and for jumping I did something really different that looks a lot better. I also made things a bit more fluid, in that casting spells no longer causes you to pause movement, which also really helps.

I remember back in the day when we were happy with Link's one movement with a sword and a few walking animations.  Boy, those were the days... :P  ;)

I think we should have a switchable 8 bit mode for AVWW :P

Excellent, was hoping you would!  :)

Has anyone here played Spelunky http://www.spelunkyworld.com/ ?  I can see similarities here: perma-death, procedural generation, less emphasis on killing enemies...  Big coincidence or big inspiration?
It's just carriers all the way down!

I've heard of it but that's actually the first time I've seen a screenshot; not sure if Chris has heard of it.  Looks cool :)

I used to play spelunky quite a bit, there was a small community dedicated to it.
Then a lack of updates and spambots drove it into oblivion.  Boo.  Same thing happened with battleships forever, sadly.

Spelunky's very cool, but despite the superficial similarities (side on 2D, procedural generation, perma-death), they're really very different. Spelunky's basically a platformer with roguelike sensibilities, and while it looks like AVWW takes some small inspiration from both of those genres, I don't think playing it will be much like either.

That said it sounds like fans of Spelunky will probably be looking forward to the lava zones, myself included there.

And there are some cool ideas in Spelunky that are worth looking at/nabbing :D

Also it's probably the hardest/cruelest game I've played bar none (Super Meat Boy, Dwarf Fortress, N and various standard roguelikes included)

Gonna have to side with Keith on this one - I Wanna Be The Guy is WAY harder than Spelunky.  Not that Spelunky isn't brutally hard; IWBTG is just insane in a way that most "hard" games can't compete with.

...Not sure what Kaizo is, though; gonnah ave to Google that.  I love hard games.  ^_^

Yea, I can't put it better than the opening sentences of the lparchive IWBTG LP: "I Wanna Be The Guy hates it's players. It hates you. It especially hates your childhood, because I Wanna Be The Guy is all about old nintendo games."

I couldn't play it, myself, but it's hilarious to watch it played:

IWBTG is sort of a rube goldberg deathtrap machine.  Kaizo Mario is more like a robotic sniper on the moon that shoots you in the face whenever one of your muscles actuates.  Which is to say that it's not as interesting, from my perspective.  But it's way, way, way harder.

Like Cave and Touhou hard?  That stuff is totally beyond me, but anyone who can even keep up with what's going on on screen has my respect.

Note: the hardest game 'I've played'.

I'm certain there are harder (whatever harder actually means) games out there, I just haven't ventured to play any of them :D
