Unable to launch game in current version
« on: February 15, 2016, 02:15:03 am »
Hello, I was able to launch and play this game a little bit earlier in the week, but since the update I have not been able to launch it correctly. My screen flashes black many times then a message pops up about being unable to change to any resolution. Any suggestions, or additional information/logs/diagnostics from me that might help?

In your Starward Rogue folder, there's StarwardRogue_Data in which you can find a file called "output_log.txt". I'm no expert, but something tells me you might find important clues in there that others will be able to interpret. That's all I can contribute I'm afraid. Good luck!

Okay, I think it probably has something to do with my multiple desktops then? I've put my log on pastebin -> http://pastebin.com/UX7aC0Mu

Seems to be a not-uncommon issue in Unity games.  Some quick stuff to try (all of these things have helped at least one person with your exact problem in some other game that uses the same engine as this one):

  • Change vsync setting (does this game let you do that? not sure) [1]
  • Try launching by opening the game folder and double clicking, not Steam [2]
  • Try rebooting your computer [3]

Also, I think running the game in a window might fix it.  I'm not sure if there's a way to get it to run windowed without being able to get into the in-game settings.

Except for the tip about running windowed, all of this advice is taken from looking at the first page of Google results for "All resolution switches have failed" (including quotes so it gives you results for that exact phrase) and only considering posts mentioning Unity (the game engine used by most Arcen games and many, many other studios).

What OS are you on?  Also, you might try getting steam to validate the files to make sure that isn't the issue.  Sorry about missing this thread until now!

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm not sure how to adjust vsync or resolution/window settings for this game without launching it.
Launching it directly didn't help unfortunately, nor did rebooting.

I'm on Windows 10. Steam validation redownloaded one file, but it's still giving me the same error after trying the different resolutions.

It's a bit of a big picture, but here is a screenshot of what my desktop looks like when it errors:

If you go under the RuntimeData folder, you should find a settings.dat file that you can directly edit in notepad.

If that doesn't work, or if you prefer, just drop the attached file into your RuntimeData folder and it should try to open the game in windowed mode with that.  You can also edit that for your preferred window size, etc.

Hope that one does it!

I tried editing the settings.dat file myself, then when that didn't work I tried using the one you provided, but unfortunately the game still did the same flashing behavior as though it were trying to change to a fullscreen resolution. I edited the file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Starward Rogue\RuntimeData, is it perhaps being read from some other location?

That's definitely the location it should be running from, so it sounds like it's a bit more serious.

I did find this, which is running on the same engine as us (unity 3D): http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/93846-couldnt-switch-to-requested-monitor-resolution/

Are you running any streaming software, or things like the Trillian in-game-chat feature?  Can you launch the game with the steam overlay disabled, or by launching the game from the direct folder instead of from steam?

I only use the Steam overlay normally, although I think I had OBS running the past few times I'd tried. So I disabled all of my startup applications and restarted (so the only thing in the taskbar was bluetooth) and tried launching it directly from the folder without Steam again. No dice.

Here's my dxdiag results, in case it could help: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1-a53nNYkvFd2Z6eTRuWW5uTWM/view?usp=sharing

Okay!  Looking at Hearthstone (which also uses Unity3D), it seems like the Samsung multi-monitor software might be the issue. I see that you have a samsung monitor -- and you're already on the latest AMD drivers, so that wouldn't be the issue.

There are a couple of suggested solutions here, including a selective startup mode to further isolate things if need be: http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/forum/topic/10429912925?page=2

I had a rage filled afternoon today with a similar problem.
I've been able to play Starward Rogue for ages. I usually play with it on Windowed with a 2 monitor display, laptop monitor + CRT. Today, I was using my W510 thinkpad to project video to a Vizio tv using a display port (converting to HDMI with physical adapter). Afterwards I wasn't able to play Starward Rogue. I could start it, the outline of the window would appear, and then it would minimize itself. Rebooting didn't change anything (to my knowledge). I have a NVIDIA Quadro 880M. It uses the nVidia control panel to control the display. I eventually fixed the problem by renaming settings.dat (and settings.bak). I was then able to start it and everything seemed normal. Once it started successfully I then reset my settings.dat file and the old one worked. I have no idea what went wrong or why it fixed itself. Hopefully someone else may benefit from this story.

Short Version:
Starward Rogue stopped working.
Deleted settings.dat and settings.bak.
It worked again.

Note for most folks that might come upon this:

If you delete settings.dat, you also have to delete settings.bak or it will just pull from that instead; it's a handy backup feature if your settings get corrupted, but not quite the thing in this case. Deleting both those should get you back to your initial starting state settings-wise.

Okay, it took me a bit to get around to it, but I tried the steps from Blizzard to see if a service is causing the issue. I disabled all startup applications and non-microsoft services, but still have the same issue.

Also, I don't think I have the Samsung multi-monitor software installed. All three of the monitors are HP.
