Terminus, complete revamp
« on: July 19, 2016, 06:03:02 am »
So, there's a lot of things about the upcoming update that I'm not allowed to share with you.  Which is irritating.

But this one, I can, so I'm going to.  Particularly since nothing has been shown for awhile...  I'd like to show at least SOMETHING.   This is likely to be the final thing I show before the update though.

The Terminus fight has always been a bit underwhelming... the patterns a bit too simple, the whole thing not as "epic" as the game's true final boss should be.  It also was actually a bit easier than the Warden, which shouldn't be the case.  Less phases than the Warden, too.  This guy is supposed to be the one in charge, bigger and badder than the Warden, but he wasn't.

So, I've redone the entire fight, while still using elements of the previous version.

Terminus now has *seven* phases, and numerous minions, including upgraded versions of the two buddies it's always had.   In an overall sense, this is the single most complicated boss I've done in the game, by far.  Took quite a lot of work to get this right.

And yes, it has a shield to mark it's invincibility.   I cant take credit for that one, I didn't make the shield (heck if I understand how the effect even works), I just attached it.   The Warden also has this shield now.  So it's actually obvious as to when things are invincible.

The video here is of the boss in Hard mode; Normal isn't ready for showing yet.

So there, that's the new fight, at least for Hard mode.   There's still a few tweaks to make, but in an overall sense, the thing is pretty much ready to go.  I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.   And yes, I gave myself 20 HP in the video.  This thing really isn't meant to be fought with 10 HP when you've been doing it over and over and over again for like 3 hours and are getting more than a bit tired of it.   Ah, testing.... ugh.

The big update is a couple weeks off, I think, and there's a TON of new stuff coming to it.   A lot of content, a lot of major improvements, all sorts of things!  None of which I can tell you about!  I think the whole thing is coming along wonderfully though, so hopefully everyone that plays this will enjoy it when it does.

I really hate those big shots. I'm hoping their hitbox is as large as they look, otherwise they're going to be a pain in the behind.

Other than that, stellar work! You've single handedly discouraged me from ever playing hard mode again xD

This is everything I ever hope Terminus would be like and more. Gone is the claustrophobic room too. Joy! I might have to go back to normal difficulty to get used to it first though.

This next update is turning out to be almost like a mini-expansion. So much stuff!

Can I ask you if you are allowed to tell us if you can reveal if there will be more lore content?
If yes, are you allowed to tell us if you can reveal if there will be more lore content?
If yes, can you reveal if there will be more lore content?
If yes, will there be more lore content?

(Something like a true narrative goal/ending to pair that revamped gameplay ending.)

I can explain something, but it's probably not the answer you're hoping for.

There is more lore written for the game.  Not specifically for this update, but it was written quite awhile ago (though I don't remember the exact details of all of it, I do remember some).  Needless to say, this just didn't have time to make it into the game's actual release.  Development was just too rushed, and other things took priority.

But wether or not any of this might happen for this update?  I haven't the foggiest clue.  Not exactly the part of the game I focus on, and this one would be up to the others anyway.

I think it was somewhere mentioned that the lore, the actual lore of the game, might be a paid dlc only. At least the biggest part of the lore, tiny lore bits might be introduced to the main game. I wasn't very fond of this idea but since Arcen Games has trouble with making money I would still buy it.

I don't know if this is still the plan because Release raptor has currently a bigger priority since this is Arcen games "Emergency" game. And after this, if it is a succes (what I hope for) Stars Beyond Reach.

The nice thing about the expansion bit (and this update) is it doesn't really require much, if any, time/work from Chris or Keith.  Keith added in a quick new thing that I've been clamoring for for quite some time (and it's something I think is a huge improvement), but he did that super fast, and that was all that either of them had to do.  And then I think Blue did a bit of art for a couple of things.  Other than that, since it's the Freaking Volunteers working on this now, it doesn't have to trouble them at all.  So that's a really good thing, they're able to focus on Raptor and SBR and don't have to worry much about this.

There is, however, the occaisional thing that none of us are able to do (typically requiring going deep into the game engine, or something like that), and I'm not sure if lore stuff would have anything to do with that.  No clue at all.  So wether or not it's viable... yeah, really no idea.
