Okay, very good to know -- thank you.  That will help me narrow this down for 1.011. :)

There we go! Switched to beta 1.009 and everything is smooth!
So this is it.

Hey! Welcome to our home away from home, in our homes ;)

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Okay!  Version 1.011 is now out, although I'm not doing a big blog post about it yet in case this doesn't resolve the stuttering issue.  Any insight anyone can give on this on linux and osx in particular is very very welcome -- I have my fingers crossed. :)

Great job, version 1.011 solved the stuttering issue! Perfect.

Can you tell me what the culprit was, just because I'm interested?

From the patch notes

Quote
Added a new settings option to the extras tab:

    Debug: Check XML Validity
If this is on, then when XML files are read in it will check to see if there are any attributes that refer to nonexistent features. These generally indicate typos or other xml errors. This doubles the amount of time it takes to parse the xml, though, so it's off by default (it's still fast either way).
This solves some minor performance issues introduced in version 1.010 when this was added. However it's not related to the overall larger hitching.
A bug relating to this has also now been fixed that was wasting about 50MB of RAM, and this bug may have been the cause of the overall hitching we started seeing in 1.010.

Well, I'm glad that did it!  Honestly I am not 100% sure WHY that was causing intermittent stuttering.  It really should not have been.  My best guess is that there were circular references in the data that it had, and the garbage collector was failing to destroy that every generation, but TRYING, and thus wasted a lot of ms attempting to clean something repeatedly.

Thanks for the fast turn around on that one. Problem solved. My Mac is now running even better natively than it was in the Parallels VM.
